Everything You Need to Know About Xinjiang’s Weather

Xinjiang experiences varied seasons with large temperature differences, spring and autumn being ideal for tourism, summer hot in basins but cool in mountains, and winter cold with heavy snowfall in the north.

spring (March to May): Spring is a transitional season in Xinjiang, with temperatures gradually rising, but the temperature difference between morning and evening is still large, so you need to pay attention to keeping warm. There may still be spring cold and inverted spring cold in northern areas such as Altay and Tacheng. Spring precipitation is relatively small, but the mountains and river valleys may have some precipitation due to the role of topography, which is favorable to agricultural and livestock production. Spring is the season of more sandy and windy weather in Xinjiang, especially in the southern part of the country, where sandstorms and dust storms occur from time to time, and precautions need to be taken.

Summer (June to August): Summer is the hottest season in Xinjiang, especially in the basin and desert areas, such as the Turpan Basin, where the extreme high temperature in summer can reach over 40℃.But alpine areas such as Tianshan Mountain, Altai Mountain and so on are relatively cool, is a good place to summer. The northern and mountainous regions of Xinjiang receive more precipitation in summer, which is favorable for agricultural and animal husbandry production and ecological restoration.  Summer has long sunshine hours and a large temperature difference between day and night, which is favorable for crop growth and the accumulation of sugar in melons and fruits.

autumn (September to November): Temperatures gradually drop in the fall, but are generally more pleasant, making it a prime season for tourism in Xinjiang. The northern regions may enter late fall earlier, while the south and east are relatively warmer. Precipitation also begins to decrease in autumn, but autumn rains may still occur in the mountainous regions, which is beneficial for vegetation growth. With clear skies and fresh air, fall is a good time to enjoy the beauty of Xinjiang.

Winter (December to February): Winter is the coldest season in Xinjiang, with more snowfall in the northern and mountainous regions, where temperatures can reach tens of degrees below zero. In contrast, the basin areas in the south and east of Xinjiang are relatively warmer, but there is still a big difference in temperature between morning and evening. Frequent snowfall in the north and mountains is favorable for winter sports such as skiing. Meanwhile, snowfall also helps to alleviate the drought in spring. In winter, Xinjiang is dry with little rain (snow) and many sunny days, but the cold and dry climate brings some inconvenience to people's life and traveling.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

As a solo traveler from Canada, I was nervous about navigating China alone—but this 11-day tour was PERFECT! From hiking the Great Wall at sunrise (Day 3) to gasping at the Terracotta Army (Day 5), every day delivered ‘pinch-me’ moments. The real showstopper? Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains (Day 7)! Our guide made the stone pillars come alive with stories. Massive thanks for handling all logistics—bullet train tickets, entry passes, car! And the 4-star hotels surprised me.

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
