Origins:The Vast Legends of the Eternal Sky

Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town

The Name"Tengger"The Spiritual Totem of the Mongolian People

In the Mongolian language, the word"Tengger"translates to"Sky."The desert earned this name because its vast, shifting sands evoke the boundless, infinite nature of the heavens above. For the Mongolian people, the"Azure Sky"represents the supreme, eternal deityhence the title"Tengger"(the Eternal Sky).In traditional Mongolian folk religion, the deity Tengger(the Sky God)holds the highest position in the pantheon. This desertnamed after the very"Sky"itselfstands as a sacred symbol of the supreme celestial deity worshipped collectively by ancient northern nomadic peoples, including the Mongols,Turks, and Xiongnu.

A Desert Romance:The"Lovers'Tree"A Sentinel of Love Spanning a Thousand Years

Deep within the heart of the Tengger Desert,a poignant legend of love is whispered among the sands.During the late Qing Dynasty,a couple resided in this region and embarked on a mission to plant tens of thousands of poplar trees. One day,the husband departed on a distant journey to aid in desert reclamation efforts, leaving his wife behind to await his return.Day after day,she would gaze toward the horizon in the direction her husband had taken;yet, she waited in vain, never seeing his return before she passed away.Eventually, her body transformed into a poplar treea tree upon which grew a pair of piercing, lifelike"eyes"forever fixed upon the path her husband had traveled. To honor the enduring devotion of this loving couple, the locals came to call this tree the"Lovers'Tree."A thousand years of wind and sand have failed to scatter this steadfast vigil, instead infusing this golden ocean of sand with a touch of tender sentiment.

Nature's MasterpieceCurves Sketched by the Divine Hand, and 422 Oasis Lakes

The natural landscape of the Tengger Desert is an eternal symphony of dunes, lakes, and the Milky Way.

Curves of the Sand Sea:A Golden Ocean Spanning 42,700 Square Kilometers

The Tengger Desert stretches 240 kilometers from north to south and 160 kilometers from east to west, covering a total area ofapproximately 42,700 square kilometers.Dunes, lake basins, grassy flats, mountains, residual hills, and plains are interwoven across the terrain.Dunes account for 71%of the total area;while shifting dunes make up a significant portion of this coverage, they are segmented by patches of fixed and semi-fixed dunes, lake basins, and low-lying hills.Viewed from high above, this sand seaspanning over 40,000 square kilometersrises and falls in continuous undulation. Its wave-like textures and fluid, curving lines appear as if they were curves sketched by the hand of God.As the wind sweeps through, lifting golden grains of sand into the air,one hears only the rustling whisper of the sand and the distant calls of camelsthe purest symphony between heaven and earth.

>Photography Tips:Wear brightly colored clothing or a flowing white dress to capture stunning portraits;bring a drone to capture breathtaking aerial panoramas of the sand sea;the lighting and shadow effects are at their best between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM,offering the most photogenic moments in the golden desert.

A String of Five Lakes:A Dreamlike Sanctuary Amidst 422 Lakes

The magnificence of the Tengger Desert lies not only in its vast sand sea but also in its scattered constellation of oasis lakes.Lake basins are widely distributed throughout the desert's interior;these basinsvarying in sizenumber as many as 422 in total,251 of which currently hold water.Among these lakes, the most renowned are undoubtedly the five mystical oases situated along the"Five Lakes Traverse"route:

Swan Lake:A freshwater lake with crystal-clear waters that never run dry, serving as a vital habitat for migratory birds and celebrated for its"Celestial Lake of the Great Desert"scenery. Its vast, misty expanse resembles a dreamscape;as you glide across its surface by boat, you are treated to fleeting glimpses of breathtaking beauty.

Ulan Lake:Hailed as"China's Most Maiden-like Goddess Lake,"it is as radiant as a lotus pond and as azure as a gemstone. The lake's waters glow a vivid red;when viewed from high above,it resembles the"Beating Heart of the Earth"pulsating within the vast desert.

Suhaitu Lake:Situated adjacent to Swan Lake, this ancient seasonal lake boasts a landscape of unique and distinctive charm.

Sun Lake:At sunset,it transforms into a mirage of fiery clouds;the lake's surface mirrors the radiant glow of the twilight sky, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty.

Moon Lake:Shaped like the outline of China's map,its waters are rich in trace elements such as potassium salts, manganese salts, and natural soda.It features a black sand beach stretching over one kilometer in length and nearly a hundred meters in width, with a sand-and-mud layer exceeding ten meters in depthmaking it an ideal source for natural therapeutic mud treatments.Comprising both freshwater and saltwater sections,it stands as the only pristine lake among the many scattered across the Tengger Desert that possesses a distinct"coastline."

The Brilliant Star River:An"Astronomical Observatory"in the Heart of the Desert

Free from the light pollution of urban centers, the starry skies above the Tengger Desert are truly a spectacle to behold. As you gaze up at the firmament by night, the Star River appears almost within reach;the awe-inspiring visual impact experienced with the naked eye far transcends anything a photograph could ever capture.Moon Lake lies as still as a polished mirror, reflecting the brilliant tapestry of stars and the Milky Way abovemaking it the ultimate sanctuary for stargazing within the great desert.

The"Singing Spring":A Spring That Sings

Located within the Shuishaozi Cultural Park lies a magical natural wonder known as the"Singing Spring."These spring vents are highly sensitive to sound;if you shout loudly, clap your hands,or sing directly at them, the springs will gush forth with greater intensity, rising and falling in rhythm with the sound.Continuously flowing with sweet,crystal-clear water throughout all four seasons, they have formed a natural mini-reservoir that sustains 500 mu(approx.82 acres)of surrounding woodland. This site has also served throughout history as a vital thoroughfare for salt merchantsan obligatory stopover for camel caravans transporting salt. The sweet, clear spring water made it an essential resting station where these caravans could recuperate during their arduous journeys.
