The Gift of Nature - A Home Built on Glacier Stones
The birth of Yuhu Village is directly related to the towering Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in front of us. The glacier movement tens of thousands of years ago peeled off and transported a large amount of granite boulders from the mountains. The ancestors of the Naxi people utilized the gifts of these glaciers to create a unique wisdom of "building stones as homes". They do not apply mortar, but rely solely on the craftsmanship passed down from generation to generation to build walls with stones of different sizes tightly sewn together, creating houses that are warm in winter and cool in summer, and incredibly sturdy. These stone dwellings with a greenish gray color blend seamlessly with the snow capped mountains behind them and the meadows beneath them, as if they have grown naturally from the earth, forming a unique "Stone Tribe" landscape known as the "Living Naxi Architecture Museum".

The imprint of humanity - the starting point of Locke's journey
In the 1920s, American Austrian explorer and botanist Joseph Rock was deeply attracted by the scenery and charm of Yuhu Village, and made it his base camp for his exploration in northwest Yunnan, where he stayed for 27 years. He collected plant specimens here, studied the Dongba culture of Naxi, and systematically introduced Lijiang and Naxi civilization to the Western world for the first time through articles in the National Geographic magazine. The former residence of Locke is still well preserved to this day, and that legendary period has made this secluded village an important spiritual source for the concept of "Shangri La" culture and modern Yunnan exploration. Yuhu Village is not only a geographical village, but also a witness to the cultural dialogue between the East and the West.

Natural Creation - A Three Dimensional Picture of Snow Mountains, Sacred Lakes, and Meadows
The natural beauty of Yuhu Village lies in its unobstructed embrace of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, creating a layered and stunning scene.
Yuhu - the mirror of snow capped mountains dressing up
Yuhu Lake (also known as "Dragon Maiden Lake") located at the entrance of the village is a plateau lake formed by the convergence of melted water from snow capped mountains and glaciers. The lake is clear and blue, like a huge gem set between the snow capped mountains and meadows. When the lake surface is calm, the magnificent figures of the Jade Dragon Thirteen Peaks will be fully reflected in it, with symmetrical landscape and ethereal and holy scenery. This is an excellent location for capturing the reflection of snow capped mountains, especially in the early morning and evening when it is most dreamy. Riding horses or hiking along the lake shore, you can enjoy panoramic views of the snow capped mountains and villages from different angles.
Snow Mountain Ranch - A Green Corridor Leading to Snow Peaks
Yuhu Village is surrounded by open alpine meadows and pastures. At the turn of spring and summer, green grass is lush, wildflowers are everywhere, and herds of cattle and sheep leisurely stroll. A winding dirt road leads to the foot of the snow capped mountain, where you can hike or ride a horse, as if walking in a magnificent landscape oil painting, and feel the breath and pulse of the snow capped mountain up close.

Humanistic Craftsmanship - Epic of Life in Stone Castles
The cultural charm of Yuhu Village is embodied in every stone and the continuous traditional life.
Glacier stone dwellings - the crystallization of rough wisdom
Strolling through the village, the most shocking thing is the glacier stone walls that are several meters high. The stone wall is thick and steady, standing firm through wind and rain, and the mottled texture on the wall tells the story of time. The alley is narrow and winding, with sunlight shining through the cracks of the stone walls, casting mottled light and shadow, full of tranquility and ancient poetry. These residential houses are not just museums for viewing, most of them still have villagers living there, with smoke rising from the kitchen, chickens and dogs smelling each other, filled with the real atmosphere of fireworks.
Locke's Residence - A Window for Century Dialogue
This inconspicuous Naxi courtyard was once the place where Locke worked and lived. There are many old photos, manuscripts, and artifacts displayed in the former residence, vividly reproducing the scene of this legendary figure studying and writing here in the past. Standing in the courtyard of the former residence and looking up at the snow capped mountains, it seems like one can travel through time and space, see the same scenery as this explorer, and feel the reasons why he chose this place back then.
Naxi Life Scene - Undisturbed Daily Life
In Yuhu Village, you can see elderly Naxi people basking in the sun at the entrance, women carrying baskets walking through stone alleys, and horses carrying goods clanking. Some villagers in the village still wear traditional Naxi costumes. This everyday scene, which has not been overly commercialized, is a precious material for experiencing simple folk customs and filming humanistic documentaries.

Photography tips:
The south bank of Yuhu Lake is a classic spot for capturing the reflection of snow capped mountains on the surface of the lake, which needs to be taken on a calm morning;
The highland behind the village can capture a panoramic view of the stone village and snow capped mountains in the same frame, with smooth afternoon lighting;
Using the narrow stone alleys in the village for composition, one can capture a strong sense of depth and contrast between light and shadow;
Please maintain respect when shooting humanistic themes, and it is recommended to have friendly communication beforehand.

Four Must Do Things to Unlock a Complete Journey to Yuhu Village
Cycling or strolling around the Jade Lake, collect the most beautiful reflections: rent a bicycle or just take a slow walk around the lake in an hour. Appreciate the ever-changing reflection of snow capped mountains in the lake from different perspectives, and feel the tranquility and clarity of plateau lakes. This is the best way to purify the soul.
Visit Locke's former residence and read a legend: step into that simple courtyard, and through old photos and objects from a hundred years ago, learn how Joseph Locke used this place as a starting point to promote the scenery and culture of northwest Yunnan to the world. This is a small yet profound journey of humanistic spirit.
Riding or hiking on snow capped mountain pastures, getting close to the pulse of the snow capped mountains: Under the guidance of local villagers, riding horses or walking lightly into the snow capped mountain pastures behind the village. Stay away from the crowds and look up at the steep and majestic fan of Yulong Snow Mountain from the nearest distance on the open meadow, feeling the shock of nature.
Be a Naxi villager for a day and experience the slow life of stone houses: find a tea house or caf é run by a local villager and sit down for a cup of tea brewed with snow mountain spring water. Chat with friendly villagers, listen to their stories about the village, and feel the slow flow of time in the stone house.

Travel Guide: Transportation, Seasons, and Accommodation

Furong Ancient Town

How to reach: Seamless Connection Guide
Yuhu Village is located about 18 kilometers north of Lijiang city center, with relatively convenient transportation, but attention should be paid to the way.
Starting from the Old Town of Lijiang (mainstream choice):
Charter/Taxi: The most recommended and flexible way. It takes about 40-50 minutes by car to reach the village entrance directly. Arrange a return time or wait with the driver.
Self driving: navigate to "Yuhu Village" or "Longnu Lake", the road conditions are acceptable, and there is a parking lot at the entrance of the village.
Public transportation: take the "No. 17" bus in the Old Town of Lijiang to the "Baisha Ancient Town" station, then transfer to the local minibus or take a taxi to Yuhu Village (about 5 kilometers), which takes a long time and has irregular shifts.
Important notice: Yuhu Village is currently under tourism management, and external vehicles usually need to park in the unified parking lot outside the village. They can voluntarily choose to take environmentally friendly electric scooters within the village to enter the core area.

Best travel time
Yuhu Village is suitable for all seasons, among which the high sky and clear clouds in autumn (September November) and the snowy scenery in winter (December February) are the most charming.
The dazzling autumn and winter season (September February of the following year): the dry season, with a high rate of sunny days and extremely clear air, is the best season for viewing and shooting panoramic views of Yulong Snow Mountain, sunny mountains, and reflections in the lake. The snow on the snow capped mountains is thickest in winter, and the scenery is particularly magnificent.
Spring and summer fresh season (March August): The climate is mild, the meadows turn green, wildflowers bloom, and they are full of vitality. But during the rainy season (June August), the clouds are thicker, and the snow capped mountains may be obscured by clouds and mist. Seeing the complete reflection requires luck.
Daily time slots: Early morning (8-10 am) and evening (4-6 pm) have the softest lighting, suitable for photography, and relatively fewer tourists.
Accommodation and surrounding tours
There are already a few boutique homestays in Yuhu Village that have been transformed from local stone dwellings. Staying here allows you to enjoy the peaceful morning and evening of the snow capped mountains and deeply experience village life. It is the first choice for travelers who pursue unique experiences.
Baisha Ancient Town or Shuhe Ancient Town is a compromise choice, with a wide range of accommodation options. You can not only experience the charm of the ancient town, but also get to Yuhu Village by short drive (about 15 minutes from Baisha).
The Old Town of Lijiang has the most extensive accommodation and catering options, but it needs to reserve at least 1.5 hours' drive to and from Yuhu Village every day.
Recommended nearby tours include: Baisha Ancient Town, which belongs to the Yulong Snow Mountain area along with Yuhu Village (see murals and experience the more primitive Naxi Ancient Town); Dongba Valley or Ganhaizi (different perspectives for viewing Yulong Snow Mountain, Rizhao Golden Mountain); And the ancient town of Shuhe, full of artistic atmosphere.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
