Origins:70 Years from West District Park to Ark of Life

Furong Ancient Town

City Memories—The Zoo of Three Generations of Chongqing Residents
The story of Chongqing Zoo began in 1953,in the early days of the People's Republic of China.At that time,it was named"West District Park,"positioned as a comprehensive park serving the citizens.On March 28,1958,Comrade Mao Zedong visited West District Park after inspecting the Chongqing Iron and Steel Company and gave important instructions:"This park must be well-built,serving the steelworkers and the people of Chongqing."Subsequently,the park gradually shifted its focus to animal exhibits and was officially renamed Chongqing Zoo.

For 70 years,this zoo has witnessed the changes in Chongqing and carries the emotional memories of countless Chongqing residents.Many locals still habitually call it"Xixi Park,"and going to see the monkeys and pandas on weekends is a shared childhood ritual for generations.Today,Chongqing Zoo receives nearly 3.6 million domestic and foreign visitors annually.From its initial exhibit of 60 animals of 11 species,it has grown to over 260 species and more than 4,000 animals,becoming a true"ark of life."

A Breeding Legend—The Life Relay Between Giant Pandas and South China Tigers
The modern chapter of Chongqing Zoo is a magnificent epic about species conservation and the continuation of life:

Panda Cradle(since the 1960s):Giant pandas were first kept in the 1960s,and breeding work began in the 1980s.After decades of effort,Chongqing Zoo has become one of the city zoos in China with the largest number of giant pandas on display,having produced 31 litters,including 13 litters of twins and one litter of triplets.The female giant panda"Xin Xing,"who passed away in 2020 at the age of 38,was the world's oldest captive giant panda,equivalent to 110 to 140 years old in human years,a true legend in the panda world.

South China Tiger Breakthrough(2010):As the national breeding center for South China tigers,Chongqing Zoo bears the heavy responsibility of continuing the population of this unique Chinese and critically endangered species.In September 2010,the technical team successfully bred South China tigers,breaking the zoo's nearly 25-year record of no South China tiger breeding,making a significant contribution to the protection of this critically endangered species.

Ferocious Beasts and Primates:The Law of the Jungle and the Light of Wisdom
Tiger Mountain:Home to the South China tiger,a species unique to China.As a critically endangered species,there are fewer than 100 South China tigers remaining in captivity worldwide,and Chongqing Zoo is the only zoo in China that preserves the South China tiger lineage.Here,you can also see the majestic Bengal white tiger and feel the regal aura of these beasts.

Orangutan and Monkey Enclosures:The primate exhibit is the best place to observe animal intelligence.Golden snub-nosed monkeys,with their golden fur,are China's national treasure.Other rare primates,such as the northern white-cheeked gibbon and mandrill,are also present,lively and often engaging in exciting"jungle interactions."

Herbivores and Rare Birds:Gentle Giants and Colorful Feathers
Herbivorous Animal Zone:The Asian elephant,the largest living land animal in Asia,can reach 5-6 meters in length and weigh 3-5 tons,making it the"giant"of the exhibit.Giraffes stroll gracefully,while zebras,rhinoceroses,hippos,sika deer,alpacas,and other herbivores roam freely,creating a picturesque grassland scene.

Aviary and Waterfowl Lake:This is a paradise for birds.Greylag geese,swans,and egrets swim leisurely on the lake,while rare birds such as red-crowned cranes,blue-and-white macaws,and red-billed ibises display their vibrant colors.Small islands,winding bridges,and pavilions connect the lake,forming a dynamic ink painting.

Humanistic Memory–The Urban Warmth of a Park
Goldfish Garden:A Shared Memory for Generations
Among the many animal exhibits,the Goldfish Garden holds a special place.It displays a variety of goldfish,vibrant in color and exuding a carefree spirit.For many older Chongqing residents,the memory of holding their parents'hands and pausing to admire the goldfish in the garden during their childhood is the gentlest urban testament to this zoo.Today,the Goldfish Garden remains a popular destination for families,continuing the joy of childhood for generations.

Amphibian and Reptile Pavilion:Exploring Cold-Blooded Creatures
The Amphibian and Reptile Pavilion exhibits various snakes,crocodiles,giant salamanders,and golden pythons.It's not only a paradise for reptile enthusiasts but also a science classroom for children to learn about biodiversity.Through glass cases,visitors can observe the unique forms and habits of these mysterious creatures up close.

Children's Activity Area:A Joyful Engine for Family Time
The zoo features a children's playground,a roller skating rink,and an open-air stage,providing families with a wealth of entertainment options.Here,children can not only see the animals from books,but also unleash their natural instincts through play,spending a fulfilling and enjoyable day.

Visitor Tips:
The best entrance is East Gate 2,directly accessible from Exit 1 of the"Zoo Station"on Metro Line 2,closest to the Panda Pavilion;
It is recommended to enter as soon as the park opens at 8:00 AM to avoid peak crowds and catch the animals at their most active time in the early morning;
The area outside the Panda Pavilion,by the waterfowl lake,and in front of the goldfish enclosure are all classic photo spots;
The park is shaded by trees,but there are many mosquitoes in summer,so it is recommended to bring mosquito repellent.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
