Origins: The Establishment of Guizhou Province and the Legend of the Border Town

The Name "Border Town" – From the "Sand Pit War" to the Establishment of Guizhou Province

The name "Great Ming Border Town" originates from a pivotal moment in Guizhou's history. In the 11th year of the Yongle reign (1413 AD), the Ming court quelled the "Sand Pit War" — a conflict between the two powerful chieftains of Sinan and Sizhou over cinnabar mines in the Tongren and Wanshan areas. Subsequently, the court decided to abolish the two Xuanwei Si (chieftain offices), implementing the new policy of "bureaucratization of native chieftains." The 39 Changguan Si (chieftain offices) under their jurisdiction were divided into eight prefectures, including Tongren, and the Guizhou Provincial Administration Commission(贵州等处承宣布政使司) was established. From then on, Guizhou became the 13th province of China, directly governed by the central government.

After the establishment of Guizhou Province, 14 successive Zongbing Fu (headquarters of regional commanders) were stationed in Tongren, and the famous Southern Miao Frontier Wall (Southern Great Wall) also began from Tongren. Situated at the border of Guizhou, Hunan, and Chongqing, Tongren is truly a "border town." This unique geographical location and the multi-ethnic human environment made it a melting pot of Central Plains culture, Bashu culture, Hunan-Hubei culture, and ancient Wuxi culture, giving rise to the rich and diverse "border town culture."

The Path of Rebirth – From Ancient Fishing Village Site to Historical and Cultural Scenic Area

The modern story of Great Ming Border Town is an epic of masterful reshaping from archaeological site to cultural landmark:

Site Foundation (Ming Dynasty to Present): The scenic area is protectively developed on the site of an ancient fishing village from Guizhou Tongren Fu in the Ming Dynasty, preserving a wealth of historical remains.

Planning and Construction (2012): Great Ming Border Town officially opened, with the first phase core area put into operation. In 2012, it was rated as a National AAAA-level Tourist Attraction and one of Guizhou's first batch of Cultural Industry Demonstration Bases.

Function Improvement (Present): The scenic area is developed in three phases. The first phase's eight cultural experience zones are maturely operated. The second phase is a leisure and wellness resort area. The third phase plans to build a Southwest Film and Television Culture Base, aiming to create a National AAAAA-level Tourist Attraction.

Human Craftsmanship – Civilizational Imprints in Eight Zones

Based on Ming "history," with Ming "military" as the main thread, against the backdrop of Guizhou's multi-ethnic integration process, and with the connotation of diverse and symbiotic "border town culture," Great Ming Border Town has created eight cultural experience zones.

Border Town Square Performance Area – The Grand Picture of the City-Opening Ceremony
Every day at sunrise, dozens of soldiers dressed in Ming Dynasty attire drill outside the gate tower of Great Ming Border Town, welcoming guests from all over. At nightfall, in the classical music hall on the gate tower, beauties play ancient Ming melodies. In winter, as night falls, a grand bonfire party is held in the city gate square. In summer, the Music Beer Carnival kicks off, featuring dreamlike lights, water shadows, wild dances, and multi-ethnic cultural performances gathered at the border town.

Market Culture Area – Ming and Qing Streets and Alleys Through Time
Migration Small Square, Qinglang Street, Wujiao Building Theater, Taoyuan Ancient Village, Miao Frontier Wall, Chieftain's Mansion, Weird House... wandering through here, every step is an experience of traveling through time.

Wujiao Building Theater: Daily live performance of "The Epic of the Great Ming," integrating martial arts and folk performances.

Movable Type Printing Workshop: Visitors can personally experience one of the four great inventions of ancient China and print a piece as a souvenir.

Military Experience Area – The Clash of Gold and Iron in Border Pass Years
The Ming Dynasty was at its military peak, and Tongren was a strategic military location. Here, you'll find thrilling military camp challenges, chilling displays of Ming Dynasty torture, and a city wall martial arts show with daily "arena competitions." Visitors can don armor for photos and participate in interactive activities like archery and pitch-pot, experiencing the training life of Ming soldiers.

Naval Dragon Boat Camp – National Intangible Cultural Heritage Dragon Boat Base
Naval training, dragon boat races, water battles for prizes... This was once the venue for national-level dragon boat competitions like the 2011 China Dragon Boat Open and the 2012 Chinese Dragon Boat Race. On regular days, visitors can experience kayaking; during the Dragon Boat Festival, they can watch professional dragon boat races.

Great Ming Water Village Jinjiang Fishing Village – Living Heritage of Jinjiang Fishing Culture
According to archaeological research, fishermen have been casting nets here since the Yuan Dynasty. The hundred-mile Jinjiang River leads directly to Dongting Lake, bustling with merchants in ancient times and echoing with fishing songs at dusk. The scenic area displays traditional fishing gear and techniques; visitors can participate in net-casting experiences and taste sour fish hotpot made from freshly caught river fish.

Great Ming Winery – The Aromatic Chieftain's Feast Experience
The aromatic Great Ming Winery recreates the Chieftain's Feast, characterized by "drinking from large bowls and eating hearty chunks of meat," along with a bar street by the river for casual drinks. Visitors can sample local rice wine for free and purchase bamboo-tube wine as a souvenir.

Water Park Area – Summer Water Fun
Water battle park, parent-child water gun fights, water slides—suitable for family fun, open in summer.

Children's Social Life Experience Area – A Space for Whimsical Experiences
Includes dozens of entertainment and experience spots such as Jiulong Cave Mansion, Military Camp Experience, Slanting House Fun Peep, Weird House, Mansion Phanto, Jinjiang Fishing Village, and more. The Slanting House is designed with visual illusions, and the Weird House is an upside-down space, making them popular photo spots.

Natural Scenery – A Landscape Painting by the Jinjiang River

Great Ming Border Town is built along the Jinjiang River, whose waters are crystal clear. Strolling along the riverbank, a gentle breeze caresses your face, and the distant rolling mountains complement the Jinjiang River, forming a picturesque landscape. There are viewing platforms by the river offering panoramic views of the entire scenic area.

Photography Tips:
The best panoramic spots are the South City Wall Arrow Tower and the Beacon Tower viewing platform; early morning or late afternoon is recommended.
The Weird House and Slanting House are great for fun, creative photos using visual illusion effects.
During the evening light show, the city wall projection show is visually stunning—the best time for night photography.
The city-opening ceremony and Ming Dynasty wedding parade are excellent subjects for documentary photography.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
