Origin: Named after a grass flute and a secluded mountain paradise

Furong Ancient Town

The Poetic Name – The Origin of “Hemu”
The name "Hemu" originates from a poetic and ancient history. In the Tuvan language of Mongolia, "Hemu" originally meant "the fat on the back of a brown bear," which was extended to mean "a land of abundant water and grass," perfectly capturing the fertility and vitality of this valley. A more romantic explanation is that the village name is closely related to a grass flute called "Sur." This three-hole vertical wind instrument, made from the stems of the local "Zarat" grass, can simultaneously produce a harmonious blend of throat sounds and flute notes, and is considered a living fossil of ancient musical art. The fact that a village is named after a grass flute demonstrates the profound reverence for nature and art within its cultural heritage.

The Road to Rebirth: From "Unknown in the Mountains" to "A New Cultural and Tourism Landmark"
The modern development of Hemu Village is an epic story of how improved transportation has led to the integrated development of ecological culture and tourism.
- The Forgotten Years (before 2013): Located deep in the mountains on the border between China and Russia and China and Mongolia, it was long hidden from the world due to inconvenient transportation and basically maintained its primitive nomadic lifestyle.
- A way out has emerged (2013-2015): The county road from Hemu Village to Tershahan has been renovated and connected with the Kanas-Burqin tourist highway, breaking the transportation bottleneck that has restricted development.
- Revitalization and Integration (2015-Present): With its top-tier natural landscape and unique Tuva culture, the village has rapidly attracted global attention. Adhering to "protective development," the local government prohibits the construction of new wooden houses, allowing only renovations on the original sites, thus perfectly preserving the traditional layout of the ancient village. Tourism has flourished, with over 400 of the village's 500+ households now earning a living from tourism, transforming the once remote village into a model village for tourism-driven prosperity in Xinjiang.

Must-see wonders: A symphony of snow-capped mountains, forests, and log cabins

Nature's Creation - A Visual Feast of the Four Seasons
The natural beauty of Hemu is a magnificent performance that never ends, changing with the seasons.

The Lively River: The Emerald Ribbon of the Hemu River
The Hemu River flows from northeast to southwest through a deep valley, resembling a jade ribbon of emerald green. In the upper reaches of the canyon, the drop is significant, creating a rapid and vibrant current. As it flows past the village entrance, the "Hemu Bridge" spans the river, its waters shimmering and sparkling beneath, offering the perfect vantage point to listen to nature's symphony. The riverbanks are lush with aquatic plants, and sunlight filters through the clouds, casting shimmering golden light on the water's surface, creating a breathtaking scene against the backdrop of distant snow-capped mountains and forests.

Secret Forest: The Golden Corridor of the Birch Forest
Crossing the Hemu Bridge, you step into a dreamlike birch forest. In spring and summer, the trees are verdant and the grass is lush; while autumn is Hemu's most magnificent season, as the birch forests across the mountains turn a dazzling golden yellow, shimmering warmly in the sunlight, weaving together with the dark green pine forests and the azure sky to create a richly colored oil painting. Strolling through the forest, the fallen leaves rustle underfoot, as if walking along a secret corridor paved with gold.

The ultimate view: A bird's-eye view from Harden's platform
Located on the hillside north of the village, the Harden Platform (also known as the viewing platform) offers a superb panoramic view of Hemu. Legend has it that Genghis Khan once commanded his troops here, and today it is a must-visit spot for every tourist. From the platform, the entire Hemu Valley unfolds before your eyes: rows of pointed-roof wooden houses are scattered like building blocks across the flat valley, with the Hemu River meandering around them. In the early morning, wisps of smoke mingle with the mountain mist, creating a dreamlike, ethereal scene—the ultimate goal for photographers.

Humanistic Ingenuity: The Woodcarved Epic of the Tuvan Civilization
Every building and every sound here is a life imprint passed down by the Tuvan people for thousands of years.

- Pointed-roofed wooden houses: The wisdom of coexisting with the land: The most iconic landscape of Hemu Village is its rows of pointed-roofed wooden houses built from massive logs. These unique structures are mostly buried in the ground to withstand the heavy snow and severe cold that lasts for nearly half a year. The space between the distinctive pointed and flat roofs is used for storing food and fodder, demonstrating the ingenuity of nomadic life. The gaps between the logs are filled with a type of straw and mud called "nuk," which provides wind protection and warmth, becoming a cultural totem for the Tuva people.

- Century-old Houses: Living Core of Cultural Heritage: The village's "century-old houses" are the core venues for experiencing Tuvan culture. They integrate historical and cultural exhibitions, folk experiences, and song and dance performances. Daily, the local "Horse Hoof Band" presents authentic performances for visitors; members include Kazakhs, Tatars, and Mongolian Tuvans, vividly demonstrating the fusion of multiple ethnic cultures.

- Hemu Bridge: A Guardian of Time and a Corridor of Life: Spanning the Hemu River, the Hemu Bridge is not only a transportation bridge but also a historical building with a story to tell. The remaining arches and double wooden doors on the bridge tell of its former border defense function. Today, it is an important passage connecting villages with birch forests and viewing platforms, and a popular spot for tourists to stop and take photos and feel the flowing water and gentle breeze.

Photography Tips:
> - The best panoramic view is from the Harden platform, which offers views of the entire village, morning mist, and the golden light of sunrise.
> - The Hemu Bridge and riverbank are ideal for photographing the reflections of wooden houses, returning cattle and sheep, and the curves of the river.
> - Within the village alleys and wooden house fences, you can capture the most authentic Tuvan details of daily life.
> - In birch forests, especially in autumn, using soft light to shoot portraits or the interplay of light and shadow in the forest produces excellent results.
> - Drones are allowed to fly in designated areas, showcasing the magnificent layout of villages, mountains, and rivers from the air.

How to get there: The Path to the Secret Realm
Hemu Village is located in a remote area, and getting there requires a "fairyland journey," usually with Burqin County or Urumqi as a transit hub.
- Departing from all over the country: The most recommended option is to fly to Urumqi Diwopu International Airport, and then you can choose:
- (Recommended) Take a flight to Kanas Airport or Altay Airport, then hire a car/share a ride (about 1.5-2 hours) to reach the entrance of Hemu Village Scenic Area, and then take the scenic area shuttle bus to enter.
- Take a long-distance overnight bus/chartered car directly to Burqin County, and then charter a car from Burqin to Hemu (the journey takes about 3-4 hours).
- Driving tips: During peak season (especially National Day), private cars may not be allowed to enter the village and you will need to transfer to a shuttle bus at the scenic area gate. Winter road conditions are complex, so those without four-wheel drive vehicles or insufficient driving experience on ice and snow should proceed with caution.

Important return trip reminder: Be sure to plan your transportation from the village to the airport or county town in advance, especially if the flight is early or during peak season. It is recommended to book a driver one day in advance.

Best time to visit
Hemu Village is beautiful in all four seasons, but the autumn scenery is the most stunning, while summer and winter each have their own charm.
- Autumn Golden Season (Mid-September to Early October): This is the peak season not to be missed. The forests are ablaze with color, and the weather is cool. However, it is also the busiest time of year for tourists, with the highest accommodation prices and the need to book very early.
- Summer retreat season (June-August): The valleys are lush and green, with wildflowers in full bloom and a pleasant climate, perfect for hiking and horseback riding. It's the perfect time to experience the "green oil painting" scenery.
- Winter Wonderland Season (November to March): A pristine white landscape with a long snow season and exceptional snow quality, it's known as "China's Snow Town." Experience unique activities such as skiing, snow festivals, and snowmobiling; a tranquil fairytale world awaits. Take precautions against the extreme cold.

Accommodation options
- Within the scenic area (preferred choice, all are guesthouses):
1. Traditional wooden cabin guesthouse:
- Experience: Stay in a traditional Tuvan wooden house, deeply immerse yourself in the local culture, and feel the primitive atmosphere.
- Suitable for: Tourists seeking cultural immersion and unique experiences.
2. High-end boutique homestays:
- Experience: Designed and operated by a professional team, the interior retains its unique exterior features while offering modern facilities, high comfort, and excellent service.
- Suitable for: travelers who value quality accommodation and want a balance of unique features and comfort.
- Accommodation outside the scenic area (limited):
- Near Jiadengyu ticket station: There are some hotels and resorts suitable for tourists who drive themselves and want to control their budget, but they need to take a shuttle bus to and from the scenic area every day, so they cannot experience the beauty of the village in the morning and at night.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
