Nature's Creation – A Visual Poem of the Changing Seasons
The beauty of West Lake lies in its dynamic panorama that changes endlessly with the time of day, weather, and seasons.
The flowing water: the soul of West Lake
The water of West Lake is its soul. On sunny days, the water glistens; on rainy days, the mountains are shrouded in mist. The most exquisite experience is undoubtedly boating on the lake, where, from the center of the water, the three islands (Xiaoyingzhou, Huxinting, and Ruangongdun) appear like emerald jewels, and the reflection of Baochu Pagoda is shimmering in the water. Only then can one truly appreciate the feeling of "the boat sailing on the lake, the person wandering in a painting." Pinghu Qiuyue (Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake) is a classic spot for appreciating water. On an autumn night here, one can see the bright moon hanging in the sky, the lake as smooth as a mirror, its clear light shining across the vast expanse.
The Entangled Embankment: A linearly unfolding garden corridor
The causeways of West Lake form its framework and lifeblood. The Su Causeway, nearly three kilometers long, is adorned with peach blossoms and willows in spring, its six arched bridges rising and falling gracefully, earning it the name "Su Causeway in Spring Dawn." The Bai Causeway (actually named in honor of Bai Juyi) is flat and wide, connecting the Broken Bridge and Gushan Island. Its layout, with willows and peach trees interspersed, is perfect for leisurely strolls and panoramic views of the outer lake.
Hidden Mountain: An Elegant Backdrop of Lakes
The mountains surrounding West Lake are not steep, yet they act like a screen, highlighting the lake's gentle beauty. Climbing to the foot of Baochu Pagoda on Baoshi Mountain offers a panoramic view of West Lake and Hangzhou city; exploring Gushan Island allows one to experience the reclusive culture of "plum blossom wife and crane son" and the refined art of seal carving at Xiling Seal Society. The landscape of West Lake perfectly embodies the pinnacle of the Chinese garden art of "borrowing scenery."
Humanistic craftsmanship – Civilization engraved in bricks and poems
Every building and every stone tablet in West Lake tells a story and is a poem.
Leifeng Pagoda and Baochu Pagoda: "Baochu is like a beautiful woman, Leifeng is like an old monk."
The skyline of West Lake is defined by these two pagodas. Leifeng Pagoda is steeped in legend thanks to the story of the White Snake. Although the old pagoda has collapsed, the rebuilt structure preserves the remains of the ancient pagoda, and climbing it offers panoramic views of the lake and its surrounding landscape. Opposite Leifeng Pagoda, Baochu Pagoda, with its slender and graceful form, is a landmark of West Lake, especially beautiful in the evening glow.
Broken Bridge and Long Bridge: Cultural Landmarks Intertwined with Affection
The Broken Bridge is where Xu Xian and Bai Niangzi first met in the legend of the White Snake, and "Broken Bridge in Lingering Snow" is a stunning scene after a snowfall in winter. The Long Bridge, though short, is imbued with a poignant length due to the legend of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai's "Eighteen Farewell Scenes." These bridges have long transcended their function as mere transportation, becoming carriers of Chinese emotional memories.
Yue Fei Temple and Lingyin Temple: Loyal Souls and Buddhist Sounds
The Yue Fei Temple at the foot of Qixia Ridge embodies reverence for the national hero Yue Fei, whose unwavering loyalty to the country contrasts with the gentle beauty of West Lake. Meanwhile, Lingyin Temple, located on the western hill of West Lake, is one of China's earliest Buddhist temples. The ancient temple bells and the cliff carvings on Feilai Peak add profound religious and cultural depth to West Lake.
Photography Tips:
Classic Panoramic View: Position your camera under the plane trees on Baoshi Mountain's Hama Peak or Beishan Street to capture the classic composition of Baochu Pagoda and West Lake.
Sunset Glow: Jixian Pavilion (West Lake Park) is an excellent spot for photographing the sunset over West Lake and the silhouettes of the pavilions, especially in summer.
For portraits in a traditional Chinese style: the corners of the classical gardens of Guozhuang (Fenyang Villa) or Quyuanfenghe are ideal backdrops for shooting portraits with Chinese aesthetics.
From a drone's perspective: Flights are permitted in parts of West Lake, allowing for aerial views of the magnificent structure of "two pagodas reflected in the lake, and three causeways surging above the green waves."
