The Names of the Lakes—A Beautiful Legend Born of Love

The poetic name"Hulunbuir"stems from a poignant and heroic legend of love.According to folklore, long ago,the grasslands were plagued by a tyrannical Wind Demon and a Sand Demon, leaving the land utterly barren—not a single blade of grass could grow.Within a brave Mongol tribe lived a young couple:Hulun—a maiden of exceptional talent and beauty, gifted in both song and dance—and Buir—a young man of immense strength, skilled in both horsemanship and archery. To save their beloved grasslands, they fought valiantly against the demons—subduing the Wind Demon, vanquishing the Sand Demon, summoning life-giving rain, and restoring life to the land.

Ultimately, the maiden Hulun transformed herself into a lake to drown the host of demons, while the young man Buir,in pursuit of his beloved, cast himself into the waters to join her in eternity. Thus, the grasslands came to be graced by Hulun Lake in the north and Buir Lake in the south. The waters of these two lakes flow toward one another, nourishing the grasslands and rendering this land ever more beautiful and fertile. For millennia, these two"Pearls of the Grassland"—purchased at the cost of the lovers'very lives—have stood as silent guardians over this vast expanse of pastureland.

The Cradle of Nomads—The Ancient Homeland of the Donghu,Xiongnu, and Xianbei Peoples

The Hulunbuir Grassland is not merely a picturesque tourist destination;it is,above all,the historic cradle of the nomadic peoples of Northern China.Peoples such as the Donghu,Xiongnu,Xianbei,Shiwei,Turkic,Uyghur,Khitan,Jurchen, and Mongol once flourished and multiplied here, giving birth to a brilliant nomadic grassland civilization.Blessed with lush vegetation and abundant water, this region supports over 120 species of nutrient-rich forage grasses—including salt grass, needlegrass, alfalfa, and wheatgrass—making it a naturally superior pastureland. This uniquely endowed natural environment served historically as the cradle for the rise of countless nomadic peoples, earning it the title:"The Historical Cradle of Nomadic Peoples in Northern China."

Nature's Masterpiece—A Green Paradise Sculpted by 3,000 Rivers

The natural landscape of the Hulunbuir Grassland is an eternal variation on the themes of rivers, lakes, and grasslands.

The Morigele River:"The World's Most Winding River,"as Described by Lao She

The idiom"nine twists and eighteen turns"—evoking the winding contours of the human intestine—seems as if it were tailor-made specifically for the Morigele River.Although its linear length spans a mere 150 kilometers, the river's extreme sinuosity causes its actual course to stretch for thousands of kilometers;indeed, the degree of its meandering is arguably unparalleled anywhere in the world.Viewed from above, the Morigele River resembles a azure silk ribbon, weaving through the vast green expanse with countless twists and turns, flowing gracefully and elegantly toward the distant horizon. The renowned writer Lao She once visited this very spot and was profoundly awestruck by this"world's most winding river."The film Gada Meiren also chose this picturesque location as a filming site.Standing upon the grassland, one sees the river flowing with a tender, soulful grace—its waters shimmering with a captivating brilliance and a lively, intelligent sparkle—making it the most iconic natural landmark of the Hulunbuir Grassland.

Hulun Lake:"The Lake Like a Sea"Deep Within the Grassland

Hulun Lake—whose name in Mongolian translates to"The Lake Like a Sea"—is commonly referred to as"Dalai Lake."As one of the largest lakes in Northern China,Hulun Lake presents a boundless expanse of azure waves where water and sky merge into one, creating a truly spectacular sight amidst the vastness of the surrounding grassland. The lake abounds with various species of fish, while the lush aquatic vegetation along its shores serves as a vital habitat for numerous migratory birds.Situated in a complementary north-south alignment with Lake Buir to its south, the two lakes work in tandem to nourish the New Barghu Grassland.During the summer, gentle breezes caress the lakeside;visitors can take a boat tour across the lake or stroll along its banks to experience the unique allure of this"Pearl of the Grassland."

Huhenuoer Grassland:The"Azure Lake"and Home of the Swans

Huhenuoer—meaning"Azure Lake"in Mongolian—is a renowned tourist destination situated within the vast Hulunbuir Grassland. The scenic area is anchored by a multifunctional,yurt-style Visitor Center spanning over 700 square meters;surrounded by a cluster of traditional yurts, the complex is capable of accommodating 2,000 diners and providing lodging for 600 guests simultaneously. With its crystal-clear waters and expansive meadows, the site has earned the reputation of being the"Home of the Swans,"making it an ideal destination for admiring the scenery of grassland wetlands and observing wild birds.

>Photography Tip:The Morigele River is a paradise for aerial photography;a bird's-eye view of the river—winding through"nine curves and eighteen bends"—presents one of the most breathtaking vistas the grassland has to offer.Early morning and late evening are the prime times for photography,as the golden sunlight bathes both the river and the grassland in a radiant golden glow, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty.

Cultural Heritage&Craftsmanship:The Golden Horde Tribe and Barghu Folk Culture

The Golden Horde(Jin Zhang Han)Mongolian Tribe:A Microcosm of Genghis Khan’s Military Encampment

Situated along the banks of the Morigele River, the Golden Horde Mongolian Tribe is the only tourist attraction in the Hulunbuir region designed to showcase the lifestyle and landscape of a traditional nomadic tribe. The site serves as a microcosm of the mobile military encampments used by Genghis Khan during his campaigns of conquest.Stepping into the Golden Horde feels like traveling back in time to the Mongolian era of"clashing spears and thundering hooves."Traditional yurts are scattered across the grassland in a picturesque arrangement, offering visitors the opportunity to witness performances of horse-lassoing,horse-taming,horse-racing,Mongolian wrestling(Bökh),and archery—evoking the heroic spirit and fearless valor of the Mongolian warriors of old.The Golden Horde is not merely a natural pasture renowned both domestically and internationally, but also a historic site where many of China's northern nomadic peoples once thrived and flourished.Barghu Mongol Tribe:The Arena of the"Three Manly Sports"

The Barghu tribe is one of the oldest Mongol tribes in Hulunbuir, and it is here that their traditional customs and folkways have been preserved most intact. At the Barghu Mongol Tribe Tourist Area, visitors can watch competitions featuring the"Three Manly Sports"(horse racing, wrestling, and archery),gaining firsthand insight into the martial spirit of the grassland peoples. The tourist area offers a variety of accommodation experiences, ranging from luxurious,star-rated yurts to standard yurts imbued with rich ethnic flair.

Khongirad Mongol Camp:The"Queen's Tribe"of the Golden Family

The Khongirad Mongol Camp is situated on the"Golden Grassland"—a region historically frequented by Genghis Khan's"Golden Family."It holds the distinction of being the"Largest Mongol Yurts Cluster in the Hulunbuir League."Throughout Mongol history, the Khongirad tribe was renowned for producing beautiful women;indeed,Genghis Khan's own Empress,Börte, hailed from this very tribe. The yurts in the camp's accommodation zone are named after various princesses;the site can simultaneously accommodate 200 overnight guests and seat 300 diners, and has even hosted international events such as the 2006 China-Russia Chess Match.

Sacrifices to the Ovoo:The Spiritual Totems of the Grassland Peoples

Across the vast Hulunbuir Grassland, numerous ancient ovoo(stone cairns)stand tall.Every year,on the 13th day of the fifth lunar month and the 3rd day of the seventh lunar month, the herdsmen of Hulunbuir's four pastoral banners spontaneously gather to offer sacrifices to Bogd Uul(the Sacred Mountain). This folk ritual boasts a long and storied history, believed to date back over 200 years.Following traditional Mongol customs, visitors may pick up a stone, clasp their hands together in prayer, and circle the ovoo three times while making a wish. They then place the stone upon the ovoo, praying for favorable weather on the grasslands and for the safety and good health of their families.
