Origin: The millennium dance between iron blood soil and human cultivation

Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town

Ground color - why is it so 'red'
The stunning crimson tone of Dongchuan red soil is due to its unique geological history and climatic conditions. During the Cenozoic era, approximately 250 to 65 million years ago, this area underwent intense weathering and sedimentation. Rocks rich in minerals such as iron and aluminum are oxidized into bright red iron oxide in warm and humid climates, gradually depositing to form thick "red soil layers". This soil has strong acidity and strong viscosity. Although not the most fertile, it laid the strongest and purest canvas for later color legends.

The humanistic painting scroll - the brilliant brushstrokes of agricultural civilization
If the iron element gives the earth a red background, then the Yi and Han farmers who have lived here for generations are the great painters of this giant painting. Since the Qin and Han dynasties over two thousand years ago, our ancestors have been cultivating terraced fields and growing crops here. They did not change the color of the soil, but cleverly "painted" on it: every year, according to seasonal rotation, they alternately planted crops of different colors such as barley (green), wheat (yellow), rapeseed flowers (gold), potatoes (white), buckwheat (red), etc. Each piece of land presents a colorful color block due to different crops and harvest periods, with smooth lines and distinct layers, like abstract art between heaven and earth. This unintentional creation is the most touching beauty created by the collision of human survival wisdom and natural conditions.

Must See Wonders: Echoes of Color and Light and Shadow Poetry

Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town

Natural Creation - The ever-changing magic of colors
The landscape of Dongchuan red soil is an eternal drama about seasons, weather, and light.
Luoxia Gorge: A Magical Canyon Carved by Light and Shadow
This is a canyon deeply immersed in red soil, with steep terrain and unique perspectives. Every evening, the afterglow of the setting sun illuminates the ravines, illuminating the layers of terraced fields and scattered villages, while the surrounding mountains hide in shadows, creating a strong contrast between light and dark, like a golden scar on the earth, full of dramatic tension. This is the ultimate camera spot for shooting sunset shots.
Le Pu Ao and Luo Si Wan: Rhythm of Lines and Curves
Le Pu'ao is famous for its beautiful curved field ridges, with gentle and smooth lines that exude a strong sense of musical rhythm. And Luosi Bay is named after its terrain that spirals like snails. From a high altitude, the colors spiral down the mountain, forming a delicate and complex geometric pattern. These two places are excellent locations to showcase the "beautiful lines" of the red soil.

Humanistic craftsmanship - life poems embellished on the color palette
The charm here lies not only in the soil and crops, but also in the humanistic atmosphere that coexists with them.
Millennium Old Dragon Tree: Lonely Watcher
On the hill near Huashitou Village, a fir tree over a thousand years old stands alone, known as the "Old Dragon Tree". It has weathered the wind and frost, with vigorous branches, and is the sacred tree in the hearts of the local people, symbolizing protection and reproduction. In the boundless color scroll, its lonely and resilient figure injects soul and storytelling into the picture, making it the focus of humanistic photography.
Four Seasons Reincarnation: A Dynamic Scroll that Never Repeats
The beauty of red soil is dynamic. In May, the wheat ripens, with a golden and red patch; In September, buckwheat flowers bloom and the land is covered with romantic pink and white colors; In November, the land is plowed and waiting for planting, and the partially exposed red color is the purest. Every time you visit, you may encounter completely different color combinations.

Photography tips:
The best panoramic camera positions are in Luosi Bay and Jinxiu Garden, which can capture magnificent color block oceans;
Luoxia Gou is specially designed for sunset and needs to be occupied in advance;
Le Pu Ao is suitable for capturing soft and graceful curves and lines;
The Old Dragon Tree is an excellent foreground for capturing solitary silhouettes and starry sky landscapes;
Be sure to carry a sturdy tripod and be prepared to deal with the ever-changing high-altitude weather.

Core Experience: Immersive Earth Art Guide

Furong Ancient Town

Four essential things to do to unlock a complete journey to the Red Soil Land
Waiting for a sunrise or sunset
Time and location: Recommended for sunrise at Damakan, the village in the morning mist and cooking smoke is like a fairyland; The first choice for sunset is Luoxia Gully or Screw Bay, with the most stunning light and shadow effects.
Key point: The weather on the plateau is unpredictable, and patience and luck are indispensable. The duration of golden light is very short, so it is necessary to prepare for shooting in advance.
Searching for a Thousand Year Old Divine Tree
Experience: Go to the thousand year old dragon tree and stand still for a moment, feeling its vitality that spans thousands of years. This is an excellent place for contemplation and meditation, as well as a classic landscape for astrophotography.
Step into a pastoral oil painting
Experience: Don't just stay at the observation deck. Hike along the field embankment into the fields of Colorful Slope or Jinxiu Garden, observe the texture of the soil and the morphology of crops up close, have friendly conversations with hardworking farmers, and feel the temperature and atmosphere of the earth.
Visiting a farmhouse to try something new
Must try flavors: potato rice, buckwheat cake, free range chicken, ham. The ingredients are taken from this land, with a simple yet delicious taste.
Fireworks and Flames: At the farmhouse inn in Huashitou Village, chat around the stove at night and listen to the locals tell stories and legends about the red soil land.

Travel Guide: Transportation, Seasons, and Accommodation

Furong Ancient Town

How to reach: Seamless Connection Guide
There is no direct public transportation to Dongchuan Hongtu Land, so you need to first arrive at Dongchuan District or Kunming City before transferring.
Starting from Kunming (mainstream choice):
Self driving/chartering: The most recommended way. Starting from Kunming, passing through Hangrui Expressway and Longdongge Highway, the journey takes about 2.5-3 hours. Navigate to "Hongtudi Town" or "Huashitou Village". There are many bends on the mountain road, so you need to drive carefully.
Public transportation: Take a shuttle bus from Kunming North Bus Station to "Dongchuan District" (about 2.5 hours), then transfer to a rural shuttle bus to "Fazhe" or "Hongtudi" from Dongchuan Bus Station (about 1.5 hours), and get off at Huashitou Village. There are few shifts and the schedule is not flexible.
Important reminder: The various attractions within the scenic area are scattered and located several to ten kilometers apart, and must be rented or self driven. Local inns can usually assist in contacting charter services.

Best travel time
Dongchuan red soil has scenery all year round, but the most colorful and richly layered seasons are concentrated in May, September, and November each year.
Color Peak Season (early May, mid to late September, November)
Summer rainy season (June August): lush crops, lush greenery, abundant rainfall, unpredictable clouds and mist, prone to rainbow, but roads may be muddy.
Accommodation and surrounding tours
Hongtudi Town (Huashitou Village) is the only and preferred accommodation area. There are dozens of rural inns in the village, with simple but clean conditions and hospitable hosts, providing the most authentic dining and tourism information.
Recommended nearby attractions include the Mudflow National Geopark in Dongchuan District, which belongs to the same area as Hongtu Land and allows visitors to experience the other side of natural forces; And the Jiaozi Snow Mountain that can be connected for sightseeing, experiencing the alpine azaleas and ice and snow landscapes; If you have enough time, you can also visit the ancient city of Huize to explore the historical and cultural significance of Yunnan copper.

IntoTravelChina accommodation booking recommendations:
The reception conditions for tourism in Hongtu area are limited, and the hotel rooms are tight during the peak season (photography golden season). We strongly recommend planning your itinerary and booking accommodation at least one month in advance. Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
