Origin: The Transformation of Sha Zhou and the Legend of the Asian Games

Furong Ancient Town

The name of the place - the natural stage of the heart of the Pearl River
The name "Haixinsha" comes from its unique geographical location - it is located in the central part of the front channel of the Pearl River, and was once a sandbank when Guangzhou was an ancient city with "South facing Zhuhai". It is like a natural giant ship, moored at the intersection of the traditional central axis of Guangzhou and the new central axis of Zhuhai New District, enjoying the core of the city's feng shui. Over a long period of time, it was just a quiet green space in the middle of the river, until a once-in-a-thousand-years historical opportunity completely changed its fate.

The Road of Legend - From Silent Shoal to World Focus
The modern transformation of Haixinsha Island is a city renewal epic that dances with national events.
- Silent Years (Before 2010): As a natural island in the Pearl River, it maintained a natural ecosystem and had limited public awareness.
- Historical Decision (2004-2008): In 2004, Guangzhou successfully bid for the 16th Asian Games. Haixinsha, due to its unique geographical location and symbolic significance (connecting the new and old city centers), was selected as the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies. This decision placed it under the spotlight of history.
- Masterful Crafting (2008-2010): With the concept of "Riding the Wind and Breaking Waves, Setting Sail", the overall design and construction were carried out. The renovation project preserved the original ecological environment and constructed iconic facilities such as the opening ceremony viewing platform like a giant ship deck and the mast-like lighting stands, shaping the entire island into a "Harmonious Asian Grand Ship" about to set sail.
- Astonishing the World (Since 2010): On November 12, 2010, an epic opening ceremony was held on this island, set against the backdrop of the Pearl River. Haixinsha became the focus of attention in Asia and even the world overnight. After the Asian Games, it successfully transformed into a citizens' park and urban cultural square, continuing to host large-scale cultural events and becoming the eternal Asian Games memory and spiritual landmark of Guangzhou.

Must-see Wonder: A Symphony of Architecture and Light and Shadow

Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town

The charm of Haixinsha lies in its grand theatrical atmosphere set against the backdrop of the entire city. The wonders here are half embodied in the profoundly meaningful buildings and landscapes, and half manifested in the spectacular light and sound extravaganza that unfolds after nightfall.

Landscaping Creation - The Oasis Picture on the Urban Axis
Upon reaching Haixinsha Island, the first thing one feels is a sense of openness and relaxation.
The boat-shaped layout and the central axis view: The overall design of the island is like a huge ship. Standing at the "bow" (the north shore square), one's gaze extends north along the new central axis, and one can see the modern landmarks such as the Guangzhou Library, the Guangdong Provincial Museum, and the Guangzhou Grand Theatre forming a cultural palace; looking south, there is the towering Guangzhou Tower (Little Mianyao) and the bustling area across the river. This "one river on both sides, two towers shining together" perspective is an excellent location for appreciating the modern urban landscape of Guangzhou.
Starlight Avenue and Asian Games Memories: On the walking path that runs through the island, the names and emblems of the participating countries and regions in the 2010 Asian Games are embedded. Walking on it, one feels as if they are retracing the "Starlight Road" of those years. Along the way, scattered art sculptures and Asian Games-themed small pieces silently tell the story of that passionate era.
Ecological Green Heart: Despite the large-scale construction, the island still retains a large amount of green space and native trees. The shade of the banyan trees is dense, and the grass is lush. In the bustling CBD center, it creates a rare urban oasis, which is a popular place for citizens to relax and run, and for family activities.

Humanistic Craftsmanship - Frozen Ceremony and Flowing Light and Shadow
The Olympic Games heritage here is not cold facilities, but tangible and touchable dynamic exhibits.
The main viewing platform (sail screen and torch tower) on the east side of the island: A huge curved viewing platform built according to the terrain, which was the core of the opening ceremony. The most eye-catching feature is the 86-meter-tall eight-sided wind sail LED screen, which was once the largest suspended transparent LED screen in the world and has now become a landmark of the island and even Guangzhou. The adjacent Olympic torch tower still stands, although there is no burning flame, its upright posture symbolizes the never-extinguished spirit of sports.
The Music Fountain Square: Located in the center of the island. The fountain is of grand scale, and the water jets change dramatically with the music rhythm, shining brilliantly under the light. Especially on summer nights, this place becomes a gathering place for citizens to cool off and watch the fountain performance.
"Haixinsha" Theme Buildings and Pier: Several white streamlined modern buildings on the island, resembling waves and sails, echoing the theme of "ship". In addition, Haixinsha has an important river cruise terminal in the center of Guangzhou, and taking a cruise from here at night is the best choice to experience the essence of the "Jiangsu River Gallery".
Dreamy Night Scene Lighting Show: When night falls, Haixinsha truly reveals its magic. The wind sail screen shows colorful light animations, which are linked with the brilliant lights of the opposite Guangzhou Tower and the CBD building clusters, jointly forming a magnificent urban night scene feast. River cruise boats are numerous upstream, and the lights reflect on the river surface, making the entire island seem like a dreamy ship sailing in the starry sky.

Photography Tips:
The best panoramic shooting positions are at the Guangzhou Tower or across the river (such as the North Gate Square of Sun Yat-sen University). From there, you can capture the entire island of Haixinsha in its grandeur like a giant ship and the panoramic view of the city's central axis;
When shooting on the island, you can use a wide-angle lens to capture the scene of the sail screen on the Starlight Avenue and the convergence of the Guangzhou Tower;
For night scene shooting, a tripod is necessary. Slow shutter speed shooting can turn the trajectories of the river cruise boats into colorful lines;
UAV aerial photography can provide a god's-eye view, but it is necessary to strictly abide by the local drone flight management regulations in Guangzhou.

Five must-do activities to unlock the complete tour of Haixinsha
1. Watch a sunset from the deck of the "Asian Games Boat"
Experience: Arrive on the island in the evening and walk to the railing by the river. Watch the setting sun slowly descend among the modern buildings in Guangzhou, turning the sky, the Pearl River, and the opposite Guangzhou Tower into a golden-red color, experiencing the transition from the city's daytime hustle to the romantic night.
2. Attend a light and music festival along the Pearl River
Key: The night view is the soul of Haixinsha! Make sure to stay after sunset.
Experience: Wait for the wind sail screens to light up, enjoy the changing light animations, watch the large-scale music fountain performance (the performance time needs to be checked according to the daily announcement), and feel the stunning fusion of sound, light, water, and the city.
3. Take a boat tour at night, viewing yourself from a different perspective
Experience: Board a river cruise ship from the Haixinsha pier. As the ship slowly departs, look back at Haixinsha Island from the middle of the river, seeing it like a brightly-lit luxury cruise ship moored in the center of the city. This "being in the painting while observing the entire painting" experience is unique.
4. Take a stroll along the New Central Axis
Cultural interaction: Start or end at Haixinsha, hike or cycle through Huacheng Square. Visit the cultural landmarks along the way, such as the Guangzhou Grand Theatre, Provincial Museum, and City Library, and deeply experience the planning and artistic atmosphere of the new urban area.
5. Participate in a cultural celebration on the island
Fun experience: Follow the performance announcements of Haixinsha. Here, large cultural events such as music festivals, fashion shows, and New Year countdowns are often held. If you can encounter them, it will be the most vivid memory of the journey.

Travel Guide: Transportation, Seasons and Surroundings

Furong Ancient Town

How to get there: A convenient link to the urban core
Haixinsha Island is located at the heart of Guangzhou's CBD, with an extremely developed public transportation network.
Subway/APM Line (most recommended): Take the Guangzhou APM (Passenger Automated Rail Transit System) to Haixinsha Station and you'll arrive at the core area of the island right outside the station. You can also take the Metro Line 3 or Line 5 to Zhujiang New Town Station and walk about 15 minutes through Huacheng Square to reach it.
Bus: There are several bus stops such as "Haixinsha Park Station" nearby.
Drive/Taxi: Just navigate to "Haixinsha Asian Games Park". However, the parking spaces on the island are very limited and the prices are high. The CBD area is very congested during peak hours, so it is strongly not recommended to drive there.

Best Touring Period
Autumn (October to December) is the best time to visit, but all four seasons have their own charm.
Golden Season of Spring and Autumn (October - December, March - April): The weather is cool and pleasant, with low humidity. Whether you stroll during the day or enjoy the view at night, it is very comfortable.
Summer (May - September): Hot and rainy, but the evening breeze can bring a touch of coolness. There are abundant night activities in summer, and the fountain performances add a refreshing feeling. Be sure to protect yourself from the sun and bring rain gear.
Winter (January - February): Warm but short, with occasional cold waves. Around the Spring Festival, the island often has festive lighting decorations, presenting a unique charm. During the New Year's Eve New Year's Day celebration, this place was once one of the important countdown venues in Guangzhou, with extremely high popularity.

Accommodation and Dining Options
Dining and drinking on the island and in the surrounding area: There are simple meals, cafes and light food stores on the island, suitable for a short rest while enjoying the view. But for a wider range of dining options, you can head to the underground mall of Huachenghui or the upscale restaurants in Zhujiang New Town.
Accommodation Suggestions:
Jiuzhou New Town/Tianhe Business District Hotels (Preferred): Stay in hotels nearby, and you can reach Haixinsha by walking, maximizing the convenience of the tour and fully experiencing the day and night hustle and bustle of Guangzhou's modern city.
Cable TV Tower/Paizhou Business District Hotels: Facing across the river, you can enjoy the complete view of Jiuzhou New Town including Haixinsha, with a unique perspective.

IntoTravelChina Accommodation Booking Suggestions:
Based on your budget and travel itinerary, we can recommend hotels with excellent locations to ensure that you can easily travel between Haixinsha and surrounding attractions. Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
