If the natural caves that pierce Moon mountain are its"form,"then climbing culture is its"soul."Moon mountain is widely recognized as one of the birthplaces of natural rock climbing in China,boasting a rich history of the sport.In 1972,US President Nixon and his wife climbed the mountain and were full of praise.In 1990,American Todd Skinner successfully opened China's first sport climbing route on Moon mountain,pioneering outdoor climbing in China and propelling Moon mountain onto the world climbing map.
Today,Moon mountain and its surrounding area have developed into a vast area with 70 independent climbing areas and over 1,000 high-quality climbing routes,attracting climbing enthusiasts from over 40 countries annually.The climbing routes on the main Moon mountain are located on the shaded side of the Moon Palace Arch,featuring 14 standard routes with expansion bolts,ranging in difficulty from 5.9 to 5.13,primarily intermediate to advanced routes.Among them,the two arch routes are the most classic,with angles gradually transitioning from 90 degrees to 180 degrees,approximately 40 meters in length,and a difficulty rating of 5.12 to 5.13,enjoying international renown.For beginners,the nearby Baishan Cave area offers introductory routes with a difficulty level of only 5.6.The rock face angles are moderate,and the safety points are well-established,making it an ideal choice for beginners to build confidence.Safety Tips:Some rock faces on Moon mountain are quite fractured;always wear a climbing helmet and beware of falling rocks.
Ten-Mile Gallery Scenic Belt:The Essence of Guilin's Landscape
Moon mountain is not an isolated attraction,but rather a core component of the Yangshuo Ten-Mile Gallery Scenic Belt.This approximately ten-mile-long scenic belt connects numerous karst wonders,including the Big Banyan Tree(where Liu Sanjie and her lover sang their love song),Butterfly Spring,Julongtan(Dragon Pool),Flaming Mountain,and Camel Crossing the River.The scenery changes with every step,offering breathtaking views.Among them,Moon Water Cave,about 2 kilometers from Moon mountain,is Yangshuo's most spectacular and pristine underground river crystal cave.The stalactites inside are in various shapes,and the cave entrance is round like a full moon,echoing Moon mountain and creating a unique"double moon"landscape both above and below ground.
