Origins:The Dragon King's Waters and Master He's Millennial Prophecy

Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town

The Name of the Dragon Cave—A Deep,Mysterious Subterranean Realm Where the Dragon King Slumbers

The name"Huanglong Cave"(Yellow Dragon Cave)inherently carries an air of dragon-related mystery.Within the cave flows a spring—known as the"Huanglong Spring"—that runs continuously throughout the four seasons, offering water that is both clear and sweet.Local residents have passed down a legend for generations:the source of this spring is inextricably linked to a Dragon King who lies dormant deep within the cave.Others suggest that the cave's stalagmites and stone pillars—assuming a myriad of shapes and forms—were miraculously condensed from the Dragon King's own saliva, thereby constructing this magnificent subterranean Dragon Palace.

An Ancient Prophecy—Master He's Regret and the Adage:"Let the Fields by the Gate Wither,But Never Tap the Huanglong Spring"

The modern narrative of Huanglong Cave begins with a poignant piece of local folklore.Legend has it that during the reign of Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty, the region was struck by a severe drought—the worst in a century.Acting on the pleas of the local populace,a Taoist priest named Master He Junru entered the cave, staff in hand,to pray for rain.Moved by the priest's sincerity, the Dragon King within the cave exhaled a few drops of rain from his mouth;at that very moment, heavy rains began to fall outside the cave. However,Master He mistakenly believed that the Dragon King was refusing to offer aid despite the drought.Consumed by a sudden fit of rage,he brandished his staff and struck out at the Dragon King's head.Displeased by this act,the Dragon King unleashed a torrential flood;instantly, massive waters surged both inside and outside the cave, rising to the very heavens. When Master He finally managed to escape the cave,he discovered that he was covered in wounds;the village had been washed away, reduced to a desolate riverbank, and the villagers had been scattered far and wide.Filled with remorse over his earlier recklessness,Master He carved ten characters into the cave entrance—"Better the fields dry up at the gate, than to disturb the Yellow Dragon Spring"—before departing westward, his heart heavy with sorrow. From then on,the mere mention of the cave struck fear into people's hearts;the Yellow Dragon Cave fell into oblivion, lying dormant amidst the overgrown wilderness, with no one daring to enter.

Brought Back to Light—The Arduous Expedition of Nine Militiamen

In the spring of 1983,Mao Jinchu—a local veteran and militia battalion commander—led a group of nine young militiamen on an arduous expedition. After enduring countless hardships, they finally rediscovered this world-class natural wonder:the karst cave.During their journey into the cave, they encountered strange beasts leaving footprints the size of a clenched fist,as well as swarms of rats weighing forty to fiftyjin(approx.20–25 kg)each. On a rock face, they discovered an inscription written in traditional Chinese characters:"Year One of the Tianbao Era—Collecting Stalactites."Tianbaowas the regnal era of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty;later generations have surmised that as early as 1,200 years ago—during the Tang Dynasty—people had already ventured into the cave to harvest stalactites as tribute for the imperial court. In 1984,the Yellow Dragon Cave officially opened to the public. To date,it has welcomed over 15 million domestic and international visitors, completing a magnificent transformation from a"Forbidden Realm of the Dragon King"—dormant for a millennium—into the"All-Around Champion"of the world's karst caves.

Nature's Masterpiece—A Karst Wonder Sculpted Over 380 Million Years

The natural landscape of the Yellow Dragon Cave is an eternal dance between water, limestone, and time.

The Dragon Palace Hall:An Underground Imperial Court of a Thousand Pillars

The Dragon Palace represents the very essence of the Yellow Dragon Cave;it is also the hall featuring the most prolific and well-developed stalagmites among all tourist-accessible caves in China.Covering a floor area of14,000 square meters, the chamber features an average ceiling height of 40 meters and currently houses 1,705 stalagmites and stone pillars—516 of which stand taller than one meter. With a density of 0.12 formations per square meter, these stalagmites take on a myriad of forms:some resemble birds and beasts, others courtly treasures;some evoke towering snow-capped cedars, while others look like rockets soaring into the sky—a dazzling array of shapes and wonders. In 1992,when Sansell,a senior advisor to the World Heritage Committee, visited the Dragon Palace,he marveled:"This is the place with the highest concentration of cave stalagmites—and the most lifelike in appearance—that I have ever seen...Huanglong Cave truly deserves the title of the'All-Around Champion'of the world's caves."In the rear garden of the Dragon Palace lie two flower pools—one gold and one silver—where crystal-clear water constantly overflows and clusters of flowers bloom in profusion;above, stalactites hang like willow branches and draped curtains, while the surrounding wall murals appear vividly lifelike.

Xiangshui River:Boating Through a Deep,Secluded Underground River Valley

The Xiangshui River is a subterranean stream flowing through the second level of Huanglong Cave.It spans a total length of 2,800 meters, with an 800-meter section currently open for boat tours. As you glide along the Xiangshui River, the valley feels deep and secluded;the banks rise steeply, and the cavern ceiling arches high above. With shifting perspectives—now tilting upward, now downward—and alternating light and shadow, the experience feels akin to traveling back to the primordial era of chaos. The river water is so clear that you can see the bottom, reflecting the stalactites hanging from the ceiling above.Bathed in an ethereal, dreamlike glow from the lighting, the scenery along both banks—featuring attractions such as the"Dragon King's Golden Helmet"and the"Conch Blowing to the Heavens"—invites unhurried appreciation. The boat tour lasts approximately 15 minutes and stands as the most dreamlike experience within Huanglong Cave's"land-and-water"sightseeing itinerary.

Tianxian Waterfalls:A Cave Spectacle Plunging Over 100 Vertical Meters

Deep within the cave lies another natural wonder:the Tianxian Waterfalls—a cascade of calcified flowstone plunging over 140 vertical meters—alongside several other interior waterfalls such as the Tianshui Falls and Tiandi Falls.During the rainy season, this cluster of waterfalls—some reaching heights of over 50 meters—erupts in a synchronized torrent of four converging streams, creating a truly spectacular scene. As the water cascades down from the cavern ceiling with a thunderous roar, mist fills the air;illuminated by a kaleidoscope of colorful lights, the entire spectacle appears utterly dreamlike and ethereal.>Photography Tips:In the Dragon Palace Hall, try shooting the"Dragon King's Throne"from a 45-degree upward angle;the interplay between the clusters of stalagmites and the artificial lighting creates an atmosphere reminiscent of a"cyber-temple."At the Celestial Bridge, use a wide-angle lens to shoot upward;the 22-meter stone arch bridge and its reflection combine to form a perfect heart shape.Since the lighting inside the cave is dim,it is recommended to bring a tripod to use slow-shutter speeds to capture the fluid motion of the waterfalls.

Human Ingenuity—The"Sea-Stabilizing Needle"and the"Joyful Reunion"on Celestial Pillar Street

The cultural and human-crafted landscapes within Huanglong Cave embody a dual gift:the wonders of nature intertwined with the ingenuity of human civilization.

The"Sea-Stabilizing Needle":The Cave's Crown Jewel—Insured for 100 Million Yuan

Located within the Dragon Palace Hall,the"Sea-Stabilizing Needle"is the signature attraction of Huanglong Cave—truly the cave's most prized treasure. This stalagmite stands 19.2 meters tall with a circumference of 40 centimeters;it is thicker at both ends and narrower in the middle, with its thinnest point measuring a mere 10 centimeters in diameter.Cave experts estimate that this stalagmite has been growing for approximately 200,000 years. It needs to grow another 6 meters to reach the cavern ceiling—literally"propping up the heavens"—a feat that, based on its current growth rate,is projected to take another 60,000 years. To safeguard this rare and precious natural wonder, the scenic area has secured an insurance policy for it valued at 100 million yuan.A close inspection of the stalagmite's tip reveals water droplets still slowly dripping down, serving as proof that it continues to grow to this day.

The Dragon King's Throne and the"Ten-Thousand-Year Cedar":The Three Great Wonders of the Dragon Palace

Joining the"Sea-Stabilizing Needle"to form the"Three Great Wonders of the Dragon Palace"are the 12-meter-tall Dragon King's Throne and the palm-shaped stalagmite known as the"Ten-Thousand-Year Cedar."The Dragon King's Throne occupies the central position within the Dragon Palace;standing 12 meters high,it exudes a majestic and imposing aura, flanked by thousands of surrounding stone pillars and stalagmites.The"Ten-Thousand-Year Cedar"resembles a lush, leafy cedar tree;its unique palm-like texture makes it an exceptionally rare form of stalagmite.

Celestial Pillar Street and the"Joyful Reunion":A Romantic Rendezvous of Stalagmites

Located on the third level of Huanglong Cave—along Celestial Pillar Street—stand two stalactites that have happily met and fused together;locals affectionately refer to this formation as the"Joyful Reunion."Ascending the long, sloping path of fallen rock, one encounters two massive stone pillars and flowstones that have been sculpted by the erosive action of groundwater, forming wondrous hollows. When tapped from various angles, these formations produce a series of enchanting, melodious notes—a phenomenon that earned the site the name"Stone Harp Mountain."

Hallelujah Music Hall and Eco-Square:Art and Nature Beyond the Cave

Situated just outside the cave entrance, the Hallelujah Music Hall is a uniquely designed steel-structure building that connects directly to the Huanglong Cave Eco-Square.The square is a perpetual sea ofblossoms throughout the year;in the spring, rapeseed flowers and zinnias burst into vibrant bloom, making it an ideal spot for visitors to take photos and"check in"on social media.

>Photography Tips:When photographing the"Sea-Stabilizing Needle"(Dinghai Shenzhen),shoot from a low angle looking upward to emphasize the stalagmite's slender form and imposing height. The"Happy Reunion"(Xi Xiang Feng)formation along Tianzhu Street offers an excellent subject for capturing intricate details of the stalagmites. Finally, framing the Eco-Square's sea ofrapeseed flowers with the Hallelujah Music Hall in the background creates one of the most popular photo spots outside the cave.
