Origins:The Thousand-Year Vigil of the Mythical Phoenix Bird of Western Hunan

Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town

The Name"Phoenix"—A Mythical Bird Taking Flight

The name"Phoenix"(*Fenghuang*)stems from a beautiful natural coincidence. To the southwest of Fenghuang County, there stands a mountain peak that bears a striking resemblance to a phoenix spreading its wings in flight;the ancient town was named after this natural feature.Legend has it that in ancient times, this place served as the dwelling ground for the mythical Phoenix bird, which used its wings to shelter and protect the people inhabiting this land. For centuries, the legend of the Phoenix has been passed down from generation to generation here, adding an air of mystery and romance to this small town nestled amidst the mountains and rivers.

The Soul of the"Border Town"—A Literary Homeland Through the Eyes of Shen Congwen

The fact that Phoenix Ancient Town is known to the world today is largely owed to the literary master Shen Congwen.Although Shen Congwen was born in Phoenix, and his masterpiece*The Border Town*(*Biancheng*)was actually modeled after the ancient town of Chadong in Huayuan County(also in Western Hunan),the public has—due to Shen Congwen's identity as a native of Phoenix—emotionally embraced Phoenix Ancient Town as the true setting for the story of*The Border Town*.As the saying goes:"Because of Shen Congwen, everyone is happy to believe that the'Border Town'is Phoenix, and that Phoenix isthe'Border Town'."Thanks to Shen Congwen's writings, this ancient town has reached a global audience, becoming a"Hidden Gem of Western Hunan"that countless readers yearn to visit. The renowned New Zealand writer Rewi Alley once praised this place as"China's most beautiful small town"—a title of honor that continues to be celebrated to this day.>Dive Deeper:Explore More Hidden Gems of Western Hunan<<[Yulong Sand Lake]

Nature's Masterpiece—A Living Ink-Wash Scroll of Morning Mist and Millennial Stilt Houses

The natural landscape of Fenghuang Ancient City is an eternal variation on the themes of the Tuojiang River, the stilt houses, and the interplay of light and shadow.

Morning Mist on the Tuojiang:A Dreamlike Opening to an"Ink-Wash Border Town"

6:30 AM marks the most enchanting moment of the day in Fenghuang.A thin veil of mist drifts across the surface of the Tuojiang River;the stilt houses, the Rainbow Bridge, and the Ten Thousand Names Pagoda emerge and recede within the fog, resembling an ink-wash painting that has sprung to life.At this hour, before the influx of tourists begins, the entire ancient city remains as tranquil as still water, with only the gentle gurgling of the river and the chirping of birds breaking the silence.Standing on the stepping stones at the North Gate or upon the Rainbow Bridge, watching the morning light pierce through the mist to bathe the river's surface, one encounters a beauty so serene that one hesitates to disturb it.This is the"golden hour"that photography enthusiasts dream of—and the most precious gift the ancient city bestows upon early risers.

Boating on the Tuojiang:A Flowing Scroll of Scenery

The Tuojiang is the"Mother River"of Fenghuang Ancient City, flowing with crystal-clear waters right through the heart of the town.As you glide downstream in a traditional covered boat, the century-old stilt houses lining both banks are mirrored in the water below.Local residents washing clothes, children at play, and elderly folks enjoying their leisure combine to form a vibrant, living tableau of life in Western Hunan. The boat tour departs from the North Gate Pier, passing by the ancient city walls, historic wind-and-rain structures, and old stone bridges before finally arriving at the Rainbow Bridge Pavilion. As the boatman sings melodious folk songs and gently guides the vessel with a bamboo pole, time itself seems to slow down in this moment.

>Photography Tips:Shoot the river mist between 6:30 AM and 7:30 AM;when the mist is thickest, the stilt houses and Rainbow Bridge appear and vanish like a scene from a fairyland. For evening shots, capture the city lights between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM;the reflection of the lights on the river's surface creates an atmosphere of pure romance.Wearing a light-colored long dress while posing for photos on the"Leaping Rocks"guarantees a 100%success rate for stunning shots.

The Stilt-House Clusters:Centuries-Old Dwellings Standing by the River

The clusters of stilt-houses lining the banks of the Tuojiang River constitute the most iconic scenery in Phoenix Ancient Town. With their lower sections suspended in mid-air and supported by wooden pillars, these timber-framed structures embody the traditional wisdom of the Miao and Tujia peoples of Western Hunan. They have stood by the riverside for centuries, bearing witness to the rise, fall, and transformation of the ancient town.By day,the stilt-houses appear rustic and elegant, harmonizing beautifully with the surrounding green hills and clear waters;by night, the lights from both banks reflect upon the river's surface—a shimmering spectacle where every casual snapshot turns into a cinematic,vintage-style masterpiece.Today, most of these stilt-houses have been converted into inns, restaurants, and bars, allowing visitors to stay right inside them and, simply by pushing open a window, gaze out upon the enchanting nightscape of the Tuojiang River.

Wanming Tower and Xue Bridge:Gentle Accents to the Ancient Town

Wanming Tower stands gracefully on the banks of the Tuojiang River;its warm, glowing lights appear particularly gentle against the night sky, and—together with the reflection of Xue Bridge—it forms the central visual motif of Phoenix's nocturnal scenery.Xue Bridge is aFengyu(Wind-and-Rain)Bridge—a style characteristic of Western Hunan—offering excellent vantage points for capturing both panoramic landscapes and striking portraits, making it one of the most photogenic"must-visit"spots for night photography.

Cultural Craftsmanship:Hongqiao Wind-and-Rain Bridge and the Literary Legacy of Shen Congwen

The cultural landmarks of Phoenix Ancient Town collectively embody the deep-rooted heritage of Western Hunan's diverse cultural tapestry.

Hongqiao Wind-and-Rain Bridge:The Ancient Town's Central Landmark

Hongqiao—also known as the"Wind-and-Rain Bridge"—spans the Tuojiang River and serves as both an iconic architectural marvel and the central landmark of Phoenix Ancient Town.Originally constructed during the Ming Dynasty, the bridge features a two-story pavilion structure that offers shelter from the elements while providing a perfect vantage point for gazing into the distance.Standing on the bridge, visitors enjoy a panoramic view of both banks of the Tuojiang River:by day,one can look down upon the rustic charm of the stilt-house clusters;by night, one can admire the dazzling romance of the myriad twinkling lights across the town.At both ends of the bridge, couplets penned by the renowned master of traditional Chinese painting,Huang Yongyu, infuse this ancient structure with a rich cultural atmosphere. The bridge itself also houses a shopping area, making it an excellent spot for visitors to browse and purchase souvenirs.Shen Congwen’s Former Residence:Touching the Imprint of a Literary Giant’s Life

Shen Congwen’s former residence is tucked away in a quiet, deep alley within the ancient town;it is a quintessential example of traditional Western Hunan folk architecture—rustic yet elegant.Stepping inside, visitors can gain insight into the life story and creative journey of this literary master. The residence houses displays of Shen Congwen’s manuscripts, photographs, and personal belongings, transporting visitors back to that golden era of literary creation. Many people travel to Fenghuang specifically to seek out the world of Western Hunan as depicted in Shen Congwen’s writings. Here, you can sense the patient waiting and steadfast devotion of Cui Cui fromThe Border Town(Biancheng),and feel the rustic simplicity and deep emotional resonance of the Western Hunan landscape.

Xiong Xiling’s Former Residence&The East Gate Tower:Fenghuang’s Blend of Civil and Martial Excellence

Fenghuang Ancient Town is a place of exceptional natural beauty and spiritual energy,a land that has produced a succession of distinguished figures. The former residence of Xiong Xiling—Premier of the Republic of China’s Cabinet—is located right within the ancient town;the legendary life of this"Child Prodigy of Hunan"commands deep admiration. The East Gate Tower(also known as Yingxi Gate)is one of the four main gates of Fenghuang Ancient Town.Originally built during the Ming Dynasty,it features a primary structure of stone and timber, serving as a harmonious blend of military defense and architectural aesthetics.Ascending the tower allows you to overlook parts of the ancient town’s streetscape and the scenery along the Tuojiang River, offering a palpable sense of the passage of history.

Nanhua Mountain·Shenfeng Cultural Scenic Area:Ascending for a Panoramic View of the Ancient Town

Nanhua Mountain is recognized as one of China’s seventy-two major Buddhist"Lands of Blessing."The Shenfeng Cultural Scenic Area situated on the mountain features over a dozen themed attractions—such as the"Phoenix-Welcoming Bridge"and the"Divine Phoenix Hall"—that have been ingeniously crafted to create China’s first comprehensive cultural experience park dedicated to the legend of the Phoenix.Climbing Nanhua Mountain offers a panoramic vista of Fenghuang Ancient Town, bringing the Tuojiang River, the stilt houses, and the Rainbow Bridge all into full view;it is the absolute best vantage point for capturing panoramic photographs of the ancient town. The mountain is also home to the Nanhua Zen Temple;the ancient temple’s chanting and bells, nestled deep within the forest, add a touch of Zen tranquility to this historic town.

Five Must-Do Activities to Unlock the Best of Fenghuang Ancient Town

1.Chase the Morning Mist on the Tuojiang River:Capture the ethereal moments of a scene resembling a traditional ink-wash painting.

Key Tip:The morning mist rising from the Tuojiang River at dawn is the absolute highlight of Fenghuang Ancient Town—it is an experience you simply cannot miss!Experience:Arrive at the North Gate Jumping Rocks or the Rainbow Bridge around 6:30 AM and wait patiently for the river mist to roll in.As a thin veil of mist shrouds the river, the stilted houses and the Rainbow Bridge appear and vanish like phantoms;the entire ancient town transforms into a living, breathing ink-wash painting. With few tourists around at this hour,it is the perfect time to capture photos of deserted scenes.

Strategy:In summer, morning mist typically appears between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM;in winter, this window shifts to 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM.It is recommended to bring a tripod and use a slow shutter speed to capture the ethereal flow of the mist.

2.Night Tour of the Tuojiang Riverbanks:Immerse Yourself in the Romance of"Ten Thousand Flickering Lights"

Experience:Around 6:30 PM,the lanterns and lights lining the banks of the Tuojiang River begin to glow, growing ever more beautiful as night falls.Stand atop the Rainbow Bridge to gaze down at the entire nocturnal panorama of the river,or stroll along the Jumping Rocks to capture striking silhouettes against the illuminated backdrop. With the lights casting shimmering reflections upon the stone piers and the water's surface, every casual snapshot looks like a cinematic masterpiece with a vintage aesthetic. You might also find a quiet riverside bar to sit and relax in—letting the evening breeze caress your skin, listening to folk ballads, and watching the lights dance upon the water—creating an atmosphere of pure romance.

Timing:The prime viewing window is from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM,when all the lights are fully illuminated and the atmosphere is at its most enchanting.

3.Boating on the Tuojiang River:Experience the Feeling of"Sailing on Azure Waves,Drifting Through a Living Painting"

Experience:Board a traditional black-canopied boat at the North Gate Pier and drift downstream, admiring the scenery of the stilted houses lining both banks. As the boatman sings traditional folk songs, his bamboo pole gently taps the water's surface;the river is crystal clear—transparent to the very bottom—with aquatic plants swaying beneath the waves.Along the journey, you will pass by the ancient city walls, historic covered bridges, and stone arches, eventually arriving at the Rainbow Bridge and its covered pavilion.

Experience:Rent a set of exquisite Miao ethnic clothing within the ancient town(during the off-season,a full-day rental costs around 50 RMB—bargaining is possible)and take memorable photos at the Tuojiang River Jumping Rocks,Hongqiao Bridge, and in front of the stilt houses. The Jumping Rocks are an iconic photo spot in Phoenix Ancient Town;visitors can don their Miao outfits and walk across the rocks. To avoid crowds and capture photos of the scene without other people in the background, aim to shoot before 9:00 AM.

Tip:When renting Miao clothing, compare prices at several shops and clarify the total cost upfront to avoid falling into"low-price traps."

5.Savor Authentic Western Hunan Cuisine:A Culinary Journey Through Phoenix

Must-Try Delicacies:Blood-Rice Duck(Phoenix's signature dish—Junzi Restaurant has the best reputation for this),Miao-style Sour Fish Soup(tangy, spicy, and appetizing),Western Hunan Cured Meat(richly smoky aroma),Hongqiao Shrimp Cakes(10 RMB each),Tongye Baba(Sticky Rice Cakes wrapped in Tung leaves—3 RMB each),and Freshly PoundedCiba(Sticky Rice Cakes—5 RMB each).

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!
