Origins: A Century of Change and a Garden's Rebirth

The Name of the Garden – A Century of Legacy from "Liyuan" to Eling
The name "Eling" derives from the shape of the mountain on which it sits—the Yuzhong Peninsula stretches into the space between the two rivers like a goose's neck, and this spot is precisely the ridge of that neck, hence "Eling" (Goose Ridge). In the first year of the Xuantong era of the Qing Dynasty (1909), Li Yaoting, a salt merchant from En'an, Yunnan, built a private villa here, naming it "Liyuan," meaning "Garden of Courtesy." The garden was exquisitely laid out, adapting to the mountain's contours, featuring pavilions, terraces, towers, rockeries, and ponds, and was planted with a wide variety of flowers and trees, becoming the most renowned private garden in Chongqing at the time. In 1958, the Li family descendants donated Liyuan to the state. After renovations, it was officially opened to the public and renamed "Eling Park," thereafter becoming an urban garden for the leisure and entertainment of Chongqing citizens.

A Witness to History – From Private Garden to City Landmark
The century-long journey of Eling Park is a history that has resonated with the development of Chongqing city:

Founding Period (1909-1937): The Li family managed the garden, frequently inviting literati and scholars to compose poetry and paint, making Liyuan a cultural salon in Chongqing at the time.

War of Resistance Period (1938-1945): With Chongqing serving as the provisional capital during the war, the "Feige" pavilion within the garden was once one of the residences of Chiang Kai-shek and his wife, bearing witness to those tumultuous years.

New Life Period (1958-Present): The park opened to the public and became a beloved leisure spot for citizens. Free admission began in 2004. In 2015, it was rated a National Key Park and is one of the oldest parks in Chongqing's main urban area.

Must-See Wonders: A Symphony of Garden Elegance and Two Rivers Splendor

Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town

The Garden's Grandeur – Ingenious Landscape Architecture

Although situated in a bustling urban area, Eling Park creates an atmosphere of "tranquility amidst noise" through its exquisite layout. Built along the mountain's contours, the garden unfolds in layers, with views changing at every step, revealing the ingenuity characteristic of traditional Chinese gardens throughout.

Kansheng Tower – The Premier Viewing Platform for the Confluence of Two Rivers
This is the highest point in Eling Park and one of the most classic viewing spots in Chongqing's main urban area. Kansheng Tower, first built in 1984, has seven stories, with its top floor at an altitude of approximately 380 meters, offering an exceptional vantage point overlooking the Yuzhong Peninsula and the confluence of the two rivers. Ascending the tower and gazing into the distance, one sees the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers merging here, their waters distinct in clarity and turbidity; the high-rise buildings of the Yuzhong Peninsula spread out below; the city outlines of Nan'an and Jiangbei Districts are fully visible. The best viewing time is in the evening, as the sun sets and the city lights begin to twinkle. The dazzling lights of the mountain city nightscape cast reflections on the river's surface, a scene truly worthy of being called "heaven on earth."

Rope Bridge – The Ingenuity of a Century-Old Stone Bridge
The Rope Bridge is an exquisite stone bridge landscape within the park, built during the Republic of China era. The bridge deck is carved from a single piece of bluestone, shaped like a rope, spanning a pond, hence its name. Ancient trees tower beside the bridge, and clear water flows gently beneath, making it one of the most poetic scenes in the park. The bridge's carving craftsmanship is exquisite; having weathered a century of storms, it remains intact, serving as an important physical artifact for studying Chongqing's modern garden architecture.

Stone Rope Bridge and Tongxuan Stone Chamber – Exemplars of Rockwork
The Stone Rope Bridge is another bridge in the garden shaped like a "rope," echoing the Rope Bridge. Tongxuan Stone Chamber is a rockery cave built against the mountain, cool and quiet inside, an ideal spot to escape the summer heat. These rockwork landscapes skillfully utilize the terrain, embodying the traditional gardening philosophy of "though wrought by man, it seems heaven-sent."

Lotus Pond and Banyan Lake – The Finishing Touch of Waterscapes
The park's water system is centered around Lotus Pond and Banyan Lake. Lotus flowers bloom in the pond, and banyan trees line the lake. In summer, the fragrance of lotus fills the air; in autumn, yellowing leaves are reflected in the water. Pavilions and terraces are built by the water's edge, where visitors can sit, watch fish, and enjoy the scenery, savoring a rare tranquility within the city.

Human Imprints – Witness to a Century of History

Feige Pavilion – Witness to the War of Resistance Era
Built in 1939, Feige is a building blending Chinese and Western architectural styles, named for its shape resembling a flying bird. During the War of Resistance period, it was one of the residences of Chiang Kai-shek and his wife Soong May-ling in Chongqing. The interior retains some of the furnishing styles of that era, bearing witness to those turbulent times. Today, Feige houses an exhibition introducing its historical evolution, making it an important site related to the War of Resistance.

Monument to the Ten Martyrs of the 1911 Revolution – A Place to Honor Heroes
Within the park stands a monument dedicated to ten martyrs of the 1911 Revolution, erected in memory of ten Chongqing natives who sacrificed their lives during the Xinhai Revolution. The monument is solemn and dignified, surrounded by pines and cypresses, serving as an important site for patriotic education.

Soviet Martyrs' Cemetery – A Testament to Sino-Soviet Friendship
The park also contains a cemetery for Soviet martyrs, where Soviet pilots who aided China and died during the War of Resistance are buried. The names of the martyrs are inscribed on the tombstone, a precious memory of the Chinese and Soviet peoples fighting shoulder to shoulder against Japanese aggression.

Hiroshima Peace Bell – A Symbol of Peace
A peace bell from Hiroshima, Japan, hangs in the park, a testament to the friendly exchanges between Chongqing and Hiroshima. The bell's resonant tone carries people's earnest wishes for world peace.

Photography Tips:
The best panoramic spot is at the top floor of Kansheng Tower, capturing both the confluence of the two rivers and the panoramic view of the mountain city.
The Rope Bridge is suitable for capturing vintage-style portraits; morning light with its oblique rays is recommended.
The red walls and green tiles of Feige Pavilion contrast beautifully with the surrounding trees, making it an excellent location for photos with a Republic of China-era feel.
For shooting the mountain city nightscape from Kansheng Tower in the evening, a tripod is recommended.
When the lotus flowers are in full bloom in the pond during summer, it's a great time for flower close-ups.
