The Name of Blue Tears - The Encounter of Light, Shadow and Legend
The name "Blue Tears" stems from a romantic association. It evokes images of coastal areas such as Pingtan Island in Fujian Province, where natural blue fluorescence is emitted by marine microorganisms like luminescent algae in response to stimulation. However, the "Blue Tears" phenomenon in Dujiangyan is not a natural biological phenomenon; it is a carefully designed light and shadow art. The designer skillfully utilized neon lights in shades of blue and green, projecting them onto the clear Inner River of Minjiang flowing from the Bottle Mouth and passing through the South Bridge. By taking advantage of the refraction, reflection and fusion of light caused by the water flow, a fantastical effect was created where the entire river water appeared to be glowing with a deep blue light, like blue tears flowing from the earth. Hence, it earned this title.

The Road to Rebirth - From a Water Conservancy Monument to a Viral Destination
The modern story of Dujiangyan's "Blue Tears" is a new chapter of cultural tourism for the ancient dam in the new century:
- Centuries-old Foundation (256 BC - ): The Dujiangyan water conservancy project, built by the sons of the governor of Shu Province during the Warring States Period, has endured for over 2,000 years and still nourishes the Chengdu Plain. The ancient bridge at the central part of the project and the surging river water provide an irreplaceable historical stage for the art of light and shadow.
- New Life for the Ancient Bridge: The South Bridge, the core for viewing the "tears", is a magnificent arch bridge built in the year 1876 during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. It is adorned with exquisite carvings and paintings and is known as a "waterborne palace". It is itself an artistic treasure that integrates painting, sculpture, and calligraphy.
- Lighting Empowerment (Recent - Present): With the rise of night tourism, the local area has adopted modern lighting technology to dress the ancient river water and bridge in a dreamy blue. This initiative has transformed the solemn ancient water conservancy project into a lively and dreamlike destination at night, quickly becoming a must-visit hotspot on social media.
- Continuous Brilliance: To meet the needs of tourists, the management department has even extended the lighting time to 24 hours every night, allowing this blue dream to last longer.

Must-see Wonder: A Concerto of Light and Shadow, River Water and Ancient Architecture

Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town

Nature's Creation - The Light and Water Illusion
The core spectacle of Dujiangyan Blue Tears is a magical display involving light, water and vision.
- Dynamic Blue: The Starry Dance of Minjiang River
- Blue River Current: The main feature of this spectacle is the Minjiang River water illuminated by the lights. The best viewing spots are below the South Bridge and the Tianfu Yuan Covered Bridge and the surrounding waters. The warm yellow bridge body lights interweave with the blue-purple underwater lights, projecting onto the flowing river surface. The clear river water refracts and scatters the light, creating a whole river area that resembles a flowing blue silk or a magical scene of glowing fluorescence.
- Rhythmic Light and Shadow: The effect of "Blue Tears" is not static. The speed of the water flow and the size of the ripples will affect the performance of the light. In turbulent areas, the blue light jumps like broken diamonds; in gentle areas, the blue light spreads like velvet. When a boat sails at night, it will disturb the entire river, causing dreamy ripples to appear.
- Change of Perspective: A blue scroll unfolding with changing scenes
- Close-up Immersion: Standing on the South Bridge or the Tianfu Yuan Bridgewalkway, leaning on the railing and looking down, the blue river water seems to be rushing past beneath your feet, with the thunderous sound of the water combined with the visual spectacle, creating a strong sense of immersion.
- Far-view Panorama: From a slightly distant position, such as the viewing platform beside Xuanhua Gate, looking out, you can include the meandering river with blue light and the ancient bridge illuminated by the light in your view, obtaining a complete "blue tears" panoramic picture.

Humanistic Craftsmanship - The Eternal Spirit of the Ancient Dams and Bridges
The charm here lies not only in the lights, but also in the profound history and exquisite craftsmanship that carry this shade of blue.
- Nanqiao: A Century of Splendor of the Waterborne Art Pavilion
Nanqiao is itself a work of art. The bridge is adorned with exquisite folk sculptures, paintings, wood carvings, and stone carvings of high craftsmanship. There are also calligraphy and painting inscriptions on the beams and columns. During the day, it is a colorful folk art gallery; at night, its own lights come on, complementing the "blue tears" below the bridge. Ancient architectural art and modern lighting technology converse here, and the beauty of the past and the present are seamlessly integrated.
Tianfu Yuan Covered Bridge: A relatively quiet viewing platform
Parallel to the bustling Nan Bridge, the Tianfu Yuan Covered Bridge is another excellent viewing spot. Here, there are relatively fewer tourists, allowing for a more peaceful appreciation and photography experience. The water-facing steps below the bridge or specific angles can capture unique photos of the blue river water flowing like silk over one's feet.
The Dujiangyan Irrigation Project: The Silent Background of a Wonder
All the light and shadow originate from the Inner River water flowing through the "Guanbo Mouth", the thousand-year waterway bottleneck. When visiting during the day, the Fish Mouth Diversion Dam, the Flying Sand Dam Overflow Channel, and the Guanbo Mouth Water Diversion Outlet can be seen. The greatness of the engineering and the exquisite science of these structures form the most solid and magnificent backdrop for this blue dream at night. Understanding its history and then viewing the night scene will deepen one's feelings.
- Guan County Ancient City: The Human World's Tranquil Flames
Adjacent to the Blue Tears Scenic Area, the Guan County Ancient City preserves the architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties. At night, the ancient city is illuminated with lights, and people are bustling about. Enjoying local snacks and watching folk performances, transitioning from the dreamy blue galaxy to the warm human world's hustle and bustle, is a perfect experience connection.

Photography Tips:
The best panoramic shooting position is at the viewing platform on the left side of Xuanhua Gate, where you can avoid the crowds and capture the composition of the corridor bridge, the river water, and the distant mountains.
The South Bridge is suitable for capturing the bustling scene where lights intermingle with the blue river water. Using a slow shutter speed (with a tripod), you can make the river water appear as a smooth blue silk.
The staircase entrance or the promenade platform of Tianfu Yuan Bridge is ideal for shooting close-up shots of the blue water with a low angle and a powerful impact.
The illuminated moment (usually around 19:30 - 20:20 in summer) is the golden time for capturing a contrasty scene with a remaining blue tint in the sky.

The three must-do things to unlock the complete Blue Tears journey:
1. Take a photo that goes viral on Weibo and WeChat Moments
- Time: The "blue hour" (around 19:30 - 20:30 in summer) just after sunset is the golden time. The sky has layers and the lighting effect is prominent.
- Locations: Nanqiao (for a bustling and dynamic scene), Tianfu Yuan Bridge and the water-facing steps (for a quiet and close-up shot), Xuanhua Gate Observation Platform (for a panoramic shot).
- Equipment: A tripod is essential! Turn on the night mode on your phone. For the camera, it is recommended to use a slow shutter speed (1-5 seconds) to capture smooth water flow. It is recommended to wear white or light-colored clothing as it will stand out more in the blue light.
2. Take a night stroll through time, experiencing a blend of ancient and modern cultures.
- Key points: Combine the Blue Tears phenomenon with local cultural experiences. Recommended route: Start your evening tour at the Guan County Ancient City, immersing yourself in the ancient charm and local cuisine -> Wait for the lights to turn on at the South Bridge or the Covered Bridge to observe and capture the Blue Tears -> Walk along the riverbank, experiencing the blue light from different angles -> Return to the ancient city to enjoy some late-night snacks.
- Experience: There are often street performers on the bridge, and there might be local folk activities in the ancient city, making this night tour not just about seeing, but also about listening and experiencing.
3. Try a plate of authentic Sichuan-Western cuisine
- Snack Delights: The spicy bean curd and cold noodles at the snack street near Nanqiao, the five-spice duck and sweet-skin duck at the ancient city, the traditional wontons, and the sweet water noodles unique to Dujiangyan - all these are must-try delicacies.
- Main Course Recommendations: On the day of visiting the Dujiangyan scenic area, you can enjoy authentic Sichuan cuisine outside the scenic area or in the ancient city, such as Mapo Tofu, Kung Pao Chicken, etc.

Travel Guide: Transportation, Season, and Accommodation

Furong Ancient Town

How to get there: A seamless connection guide
Dujiangyan is easily accessible, with Chengdu being the primary mode of transportation.
- Starting from downtown Chengdu:
- High-speed rail (recommended): Take the intercity train from Xipu Station to Dujiangyan Station. The journey takes about 20-30 minutes and costs around 10 yuan. After exiting the station, it's about a 5-10 minute taxi ride to the Nanqiao/Guanxian Ancient City area.
- Direct shuttle bus/tourist bus: There are also direct shuttle buses from places like Kuanzhai Alley and Chunxi Road in Chengdu to Dujiangyan Scenic Area, but the journey takes a long time.
- By car: Navigate to "Dujiangyan South Bridge Parking Lot" or "Guanxian Ancient City Parking Lot". The journey takes about 1-1.5 hours and the parking fee is about 10-20 yuan per night.
Important Return Trip Reminder: If you need to return to Chengdu after viewing the night view, be sure to check and book the latest high-speed train from Dujiangyan Station to Xipu Station in advance. If you miss it, you can choose to book a ride-hailing service, but the cost will be higher.

Best time to visit
The blue tears phenomenon in Dujiangyan can be viewed in all four seasons, but the best time to experience it is during the spring and autumn seasons.
- Spring and autumn (March-May, September-November): The climate is most comfortable and pleasant. During the day, visiting the Dujiangyan scenic area is cool, and the nights are not too cold. In spring, the ancient city is adorned with flowers, and in autumn, the sky is high and the clouds are light.
- Summer Retreat Season (June-August): Dujiangyan is cooler than Chengdu, making it a great place to escape the summer heat. Strolling along the riverbank at night is comfortable, and since it gets dark later in summer, with lights turning on around 8 PM, there's plenty of time for nighttime activities. However, be aware of flood warnings; heavy rains or rising water levels in the Minjiang River may affect water quality and the lighting effects.
- Quiet Winter Season (December-February): Fewer tourists, and the lights come on earlier (around 5:30 PM-6:40 PM), allowing you to see the night view sooner. However, be sure to dress warmly, as the wind chill is noticeable along the river.

Accommodation options
- Areas surrounding scenic spots/ancient towns (preferred):
1. Guesthouses in Nanqiao/Guanxian Ancient City: These guesthouses are just a few minutes' walk from the viewpoints, making them convenient for resting after sightseeing. Most are characteristic guesthouses, with prices ranging from 200-400 yuan per night. Some rooms with balconies even offer partial river views.
2. Hotels in Dujiangyan City: There are more options, ranging from budget to high-end hotels. You will need to take a taxi or short-distance bus to the scenic area, which takes about 10-15 minutes.
- Same-day round trip from Chengdu (economical and efficient option):
Thanks to the convenient high-speed rail, many tourists choose to come to Chengdu during the day and return by late-night high-speed train after enjoying the night view. This method saves on accommodation costs, and Chengdu offers an extremely wide range of accommodation options.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!
