Origin: Mythology and Natural Wonders

Legend of the Name of Conch
The name 'Hailuogou' is full of Tibetan mythology. According to legend, the Tibetan Buddhist master Tang Dongjiebu once traveled here and stayed overnight in a ditch. The next morning, he left his white seashell in the mountains. Afterwards, whenever the mountain wind blew through the valley, it would emit echoes like the horn of a conch horn, as if the mountain god was playing magic instruments, hence the name "Hailuogou". This legend injects a sacred and dynamic aura into this icy glacier world.

 Discovery and Protection of Glaciers
The modern story of Hailuogou Glacier is a scientific exploration history of human understanding of nature, reverence for nature, and protection of nature.
The first appearance of glaciers (1930s): First recorded by American explorer and geographer Joseph Locke during his exploration of Mount Gongga, its astonishing size and low altitude characteristics began to attract the attention of the world geography community.
Scientific expedition (after the 1980s): Chinese scientists conducted a systematic and comprehensive investigation of Hailuogou, revealing its unique value as a oceanic glacier. Here, glaciers are active in movement, melting and replenishing rapidly, making it a natural laboratory for studying climate change.
National Park Establishment (1987): Hailuogou was officially approved as a National Glacier Forest Park, opening a new chapter in the combination of scientific protection and ecotourism.
World attention (21st century present): With the improvement of infrastructure, Hailuogou, with its extremely high accessibility and stunning scenery, has become an indispensable pearl on the western Sichuan tourism circle, attracting global travelers to come and see this "accessible ice age".

Must See Wonders: A masterpiece of the symphony of ice and fire in heaven and earth

The charm of Hailuogou lies in its harmonious integration of extreme cold (glaciers) and extreme warmth (hot springs) in the same painting, while embellishing forests, snow capped mountains, and Tibetan culture, forming a grand symphonic poem.
Natural Creation - The Dance of Glaciers, Hot Springs, and Forests
Majestic Glacier: Flowing Solid Rivers
Hailuogou No.1 Glacier is its most magnificent chapter, with a total length of 14.7 kilometers and a tail end extending into the forest, which is rare in the world.
Da Bing Waterfall: This is the soul of a glacier, with a width of 1100 meters and a drop of 1080 meters, equivalent to a solid ice wall more than ten times larger than Huangguoshu Waterfall. It is like a giant wave frozen by time, collapsing and roaring all day long, shaking the valley with its sound, magnificent. Taking a cableway to overlook from the sky is the best way to feel its majestic momentum.
Glacier tongue: This is the part that ordinary tourists can come into contact with on foot. Walking on a gray white ice body covered with ice cracks, caves, glaciers, and mushrooms, with blue ice formed by centuries or even tens of thousands of years of compression beneath one's feet, as if strolling on another planet. The glaciers here are constantly melting and flowing, and the scenery is changing rapidly.
City Gate Cave: A natural ice arch formed at the end of a glacier tongue due to erosion by rivers beneath the ice. Under the crystal clear blue ice body, glaciers can be seen rushing out, which is a vivid portrayal of glacier vitality and an excellent photography spot.
Snowy hot springs: the passion surging from the earth
Contrasting with the coldness of the Wannian Glacier, there are hundreds of hot springs gushing out from underground, with water temperatures reaching over 90 ℃, making it the ultimate experience of "ice and fire duality".
Camp 2 Hot Springs (Real Glacier Hot Springs): Located in a glacier forest, multiple natural hot springs converge into a pool. In the winter when snow is flying everywhere, soaking in the steaming hot springs, looking up, you will see crystal clear glaciers and verdant fir trees. This scene is unique in the world.
Gongga Shentang Hot Spring (a well-equipped hot spring hotel): The outlet temperature reaches up to 88 ℃ and is rich in various minerals. After a day of hiking on the glacier, washing away one's fatigue here is the ultimate pleasure.
Rizhao Jinshan: The stunning appearance of Gongga Mountain
In the early morning, the rising sun cast its first ray of golden light onto the main peak of Gongga at an altitude of 7556 meters. The continuous peaks gradually turned from cold gray white to golden and orange red, finally illuminating the sky like a burning pyramid. This process is sacred and brief, and is the most unmissable "opening ceremony" in Hailuogou. The Jinshan Hotel at Camp 3 and the cableway terminal at Camp 4 are recognized as the best viewing points.
Primitive Forest: A Colorful Kingdom of Life
From an altitude of over 1000 meters to nearly 5000 meters, Hailuogou is vertically distributed with a complete plant belt. Walking through the primitive forest next to the glacier, towering ancient trees that require several people to embrace can be seen everywhere, with pine vines hanging on the trees. During spring and summer, alpine rhododendrons bloom in full bloom; In autumn, the layered forests are dyed and colorful.

Humanistic Craftsmanship - Red Memories on the Tea Horse Ancient Road
Moxi Ancient Town: A Time Slice of Ancient Town
The entrance of Hailuogou - Moxi Town, was an important post station on the "Tea Horse Ancient Road" back then. Nowadays, the ancient town still retains the ancient architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties, with bluestone roads, French churches (Moxi Catholic Church), and Tibetan style residences coexisting, emitting a blend of diverse cultures. The ancient town is also an important historical node of the Red Army's Long March. The famous "Moxi Conference" was held here, and Comrade Mao Zedong stayed here, adding a heavy red memory to the ancient town.

Photography tips:
The best glacier panoramic camera position is on the aerial cableway or observation deck of Camp 4, which can include the Great Ice Waterfall and the Gongga Mountains.
To shoot at Rizhao Jinshan, it is necessary to check the sunrise time in advance and arrive at Camp 3 or 4 half an hour early, using a tripod and telephoto lens.
The Chengmen Cave is suitable for capturing the texture details of glaciers and the texture of blue ice.
The hot springs at Camp 2 are suitable for shooting fantastic scenes of "glaciers+hot springs+forests" in the same frame. It is recommended to go there during winter when there is snow.

Five Must Do Things to Unlock a Complete Journey to Hailuogou

Location: Under the guidance of a professional guide, hike or take a scenic sightseeing bus from Camp 3 to the front of the glacier tongue.
Bathing in Snow Mountain Glacier Hot Springs
Key: Experience the ultimate contrast of 'half glacier, half flame'! It is recommended to go after hiking on the glacier to let the warm spring water soothe the body and mind. Experience: The first choice is the wild outdoor glacier hot spring in Camp 2, or the comfortable bathing pool of Gongga God Soup.
Guarding Gongga Rizhao Jinshan
Waiting for the miracle of the sun igniting the king of Shu Mountain into gold in the clear air. This process is sacred and brief, and it is the most breath holding moment in Hailuogou. Stay one night in advance in the scenic area (near Camp 3) to ensure timely arrival at the observation deck in the morning.
Exploring the Ancient Tea Horse Road Town
Strolling along the bluestone road of Moxi Ancient Town, visiting the Moxi Catholic Church and the former site of Chairman Mao's residence, tasting a special roasted chicken or yak soup pot, and experiencing the ancient town's fireworks atmosphere intertwined with history and modernity.
Hiking the Primitive Forest Trail
Following the winding forest trail, weaving through towering ancient trees and alpine rhododendrons, breathing heavily in the air rich in negative oxygen ions, searching for traces of squirrels along the way, and experiencing the vibrant vitality of nature.

Travel Guide: Transportation, Accommodation, and Seasons

Furong Ancient Town

How to reach: Seamless Connection Guide
Hailuogou is about 280 kilometers away from Chengdu, and driving is the main mode of transportation.
Departing from Chengdu (main method):
Self driving/chartered car: navigate to "Hailuogou Glacier Forest Park", take the Yakang Expressway (G4218) to Luding exit, then take the provincial road to Moxi Town, the whole journey takes about 3.5-4 hours. Travel tip: There are many bends on mountain roads, and some sections may have dark ice in winter. Drive with caution.
Tourist Express: There is a designated shuttle bus from Chengdu Xinnanmen Station to Hailuogou, which takes about 5-6 hours and is suitable for non self driving tourists.
Starting from surrounding attractions: It can be connected with Kangding (1.5 hours), Luding Bridge (1 hour), and Xindu Bridge (2.5 hours) for sightseeing, forming the classic western Sichuan small loop.
Important reminder: The entrance of the scenic area is located in Moxi Town, and all tourists need to transfer to a unified sightseeing bus here to enter the internal attractions (the journey takes about 1 hour).

Best Travel Time
Hailuogou has unique scenery throughout the four seasons, but the differences in landscape and experience are significant. The best time to visit is in autumn and winter.
Autumn and Winter Golden Season (late October to April of the following year): With stable weather and many sunny days, it is the season with the highest probability of enjoying the "Sunshine Golden Mountain". The glaciers in winter appear cleaner and more magnificent, with magnificent ice waterfalls, and the best experience when paired with snow covered hot springs.
Spring and summer vibrant season (May to September): There is a lot of rain, with clouds and mist swirling around, and snow capped mountains appearing and disappearing intermittently. At this time, the forest is lush, the rhododendrons on the high mountains are in full bloom, and the scenery is fresh, but the probability of seeing the complete sunshine of Jinshan is relatively low. Summer is also a period of glacier melting, and landscapes such as ice cracks are more prominent.

 Accommodation Options
Within the scenic area (preferred, especially for viewing Rizhao Jinshan):
Camp 3 (Jinshan Hotel, Yinshan Hotel, etc.): Located in the core of the scenic area, it is the best place to enjoy the view of Rizhao Jinshan on foot in the early morning. The conditions are relatively simple, but the geographical location is irreplaceable.
Campsite 1/2 (Glacier Hot Spring Resort, etc.): With natural hot spring resources, the window opens to the forest, providing a unique experience. However, it is slightly away from the observation deck and requires taking a sightseeing car.
Outside the scenic area (Moxi Town, with the most diverse and flexible options):
Various hotels and homestays in Moxi Ancient Town: ranging from economy to high-end hotels, with a wide range of dining and shopping options, and a relatively lively nightlife. Suitable for tourists who arrive late on the first day or do not need to watch the sunrise on the second day.

IntoTravelChina accommodation booking recommendations:
We strongly recommend planning your itinerary and booking accommodation at least one month in advance, especially during holidays such as National Day, May Day, and Spring Festival, as well as the peak viewing season in autumn and winter. Accommodation in the scenic area is very tight. By booking with us, not only can you get real-time room availability, but we can also match you with the most suitable accommodation based on your core needs for watching the sunrise and soaking in hot springs. We also package transportation, tickets, and activities to ensure the comfort and smoothness of high-altitude travel. >>Click to contact IntoTravelChina travel consultant

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
