Origin: From Military Throat to National Symbol

The name of the pass - the origin of "Bada"
The name "Badaling" comes from its geographical location of being well connected and guarding key points. A widely accepted explanation is that this place is called Badaling because "the road splits from here and extends in all directions". As a strategic pass in the Yanshan Mountains, it has always been a throat passage for Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Zhangjiakou and other places to enter Beijing, known as the "first barrier between Beijing and the north". Its strategic position is crucial throughout the entire Great Wall.

Glorious Road - From the Warring States Border Wall to World Wonders
The construction and improvement of the Badaling Great Wall spanned several dynasties and is a condensed history of border military affairs.
Early Construction (Warring States to Northern Wei): The earliest Great Wall in this area can be traced back to the Warring States period. Northern Wei and Northern Qi also built side walls here, laying the foundation.
Dingsheng Construction (Ming Dynasty): The magnificent Great Wall we see today was mainly built during the Ming Dynasty (1505). In order to strengthen the defense of the capital, the Ming court spared no expense and expanded and reinforced the Badaling section for more than 80 years, making it a copper and iron wall guarding the capital.
Modern Silence and Rebirth (20th Century): After hundreds of years of wind, rain, and war, the Great Wall was once damaged. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Badaling became one of the first sections of the Great Wall to be repaired and opened to the outside world (repaired in 1953 and opened in 1958). Its repair and opening have milestone significance.
World attention (20th century present): In 1961, the Badaling Great Wall was listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit. In 1987, as the representative of the Great Wall of China, it was included in the The World Heritage List by UNESCO. Nowadays, it is not only China's national business card, but also the preferred window for global tourists to understand Chinese history and culture.

Must See Wonders: Symphony of Natural Perils and Human Power

Furong Ancient Town Furong Ancient Town

The charm of Badaling lies in its perfect combination of the steepness and magnificence of Yanshan Mountain with the magnificence and resilience of human engineering. On the ridges and between the stones and bricks, it exudes a "majestic, dangerous, peculiar, and beautiful" charm.
Natural Creation - The Turbulent Picture of the Yanshan Mountains
The magnificence of the Great Wall itself is partly due to the strategic terrain it relies on. Badaling is located at the main peak of Jundu Mountain, with an altitude of 1015 meters. The mountains overlap and the terrain is steep.
The danger of mountain terrain: The city wall follows the mountain terrain and winds along the steep ridges. When climbing, the valleys on both sides are deep and the view is extremely broad. This kind of site selection itself reflects the supreme wisdom of ancient military strategists to use danger to block the terrain.
Four Seasons Scenery:
Spring flowers: In spring, the mountain flowers are in full bloom, with apricot blossoms and mountain peach blossoms dotted between the city walls, exuding a sense of firmness and softness.
Summer Green: In summer, the mountains are lush with greenery, and the Great Wall swims like a blue dragon in the waves of the green sea.
Autumn color: Autumn is the golden season, with layers of forests dyed in colorful hues. The magnificent Great Wall and gorgeous autumn leaves form a stunning painting.
Winter Snow: After the winter snow, the Great Wall is covered in silver and appears even more vast and magnificent, with a profound artistic conception.

Humanistic Craftsmanship - Military Epic Written in Bricks and Stones
Every brick and enemy tower here is the crystallization of defense wisdom from the era of cold weapons.
Guancheng and City Wall: Badaling Guancheng (East Gate "Juyong Outer Town", West Gate "North Gate Lock Key") is the command center. The city wall is tall and sturdy, with an average height of about 7.5 meters and a wide top that can accommodate five horses riding together. On the outer side of the wall are tall battlements used for observation and shooting; The inner side is a parapet wall to ensure safety.
Enemy towers and battle platforms: The densely distributed enemy towers are the essence of the Great Wall. They are divided into two layers, with the lower layer providing accommodation and food storage for soldiers, and the upper layer used for observation and shooting. The various shapes, such as square "storefronts" and more complex "warehouse buildings" (such as the famous North Eighth Building, which is 888 meters above sea level and the highest point in Badaling), constitute a deep defense system.
The "Not a Hero Without the Great Wall" monument is located near the Hero Slope and is famous throughout the world for Mao Zedong's poetry. Remembering here has become a spiritual ceremony for completing the climb and experiencing passion.
The Great Wall Museum: Located within Guancheng, it is the first specialized Great Wall museum in China. The system showcases the history, architecture, military role, and cultural exchange significance of the Great Wall, serving as a treasure trove of knowledge for a deep understanding of Great Wall culture.

Photography tips:
The best panoramic camera position is on the north or south fourth floor, which can capture the classic scene of the Great Wall winding like a giant dragon on the mountain ridge.
The best light and shadow camera position is in the early morning or evening, where side or backlight can outline the three-dimensional sense and brick texture of the city wall, especially at sunrise after snow in winter.
The best check-in spot is in front of Haohan Slope and the "Haohan Monument", which has a profound meaning.
Drone flights must strictly comply with the regulations of the scenic area, and are usually prohibited from flying in the core area of the Great Wall. Please confirm in advance.

Core Experience: Immersive Great Wall Climbing Guide

Furong Ancient Town

Five Must Do Things to Unlock a Complete Journey to the Great Wall
Be a 'hero' and climb to the highest enemy building
Goal: Climb to the north eighth floor (888 meters above sea level). This is the high point of Badaling, where you can gaze into the distance and see the Great Wall undulating and galloping like a giant dragon in the mountains. You can most appreciate its magnificence and grandeur, and personally feel the heroic spirit of "not being a hero without the Great Wall".
Walk a section of the primitive city wall and touch the traces of history
In addition to the well repaired north-south main line, attention can be paid to whether the scenic area has opened up the relatively more primitive and less tourist parts of the southern line. Walking on the unrenovated city walls, touching the mottled bricks and stones, one can better feel the vicissitudes and weight of history.
Previous history class, visit the Great Wall Museum
Before and after climbing, make sure to set aside time to visit the Great Wall Museum of China. Through rich cultural relics, models, and historical materials, a comprehensive understanding of the construction history, military role, architectural techniques, and major historical events surrounding the Great Wall can be gained. Climbing is not just a physical challenge, but also a deep cultural learning experience.
Find a unique perspective to shoot exclusive blockbusters
Key: Avoid the most common central axis perspective! Try to take a silhouette of the enemy building from the side, or use the battlements as a foreground to frame the distant mountains, or capture the focused expression of companions climbing. Taking photos in front of the gates of "North Gate Lock Key" or "Juyong Outer Town" can also provide a strong sense of history.
Experience the journey of ancient and modern times, try cable cars or pulleys
For tourists with limited physical strength or who want to experience different perspectives, they can choose to take the cable car (North Line) or the ground cable car (South Line) to overlook the panoramic view of the Great Wall from the sky and feel the collision of modern technology and ancient wonders. When descending the mountain, you can also choose to ride on a roller coaster to add fun.

 Tourist Route Suggestions
One day "classic essence" tour (suitable for most tourists):
Arrive at the scenic area as early as possible in the morning (recommended before 8 o'clock) to avoid crowds → Start from Guancheng and choose to climb north, passing through the North 1st floor to the North 8th floor along the way, challenging the Haohan Slope and reaching the highest point (about 2.5-3 hours) → You can choose to descend the mountain near the North 4th floor or North 8th floor, or return to Guancheng by the original route → Visit the Great Wall Museum and Guancheng buildings in the afternoon → If you have extra energy, you can climb the south line for a short distance to enjoy the scenery from different angles → Return in the evening.
IntoTravelChina reminds that there are a large number of tourists on weekends and holidays. It is strongly recommended to make an online real name reservation and purchase tickets in advance, and try to enter the park as early as possible. Wear non slip and comfortable hiking shoes, and take care of sun protection and hydration.
Two day "Deep Culture" Joint Tour (Highly Recommended):
Day 1: In the morning, head to Badaling and spend the whole day hiking on the north and south lines to fully experience the scenery and challenges of different sections. In the evening, you can choose to stay at a special hotel or homestay at the foot of the Badaling Great Wall and enjoy the tranquility of the mountains.
Day 2: In the morning, visit the nearby Badaling Wildlife World or visit the Zhan Tianyou Memorial Hall (located at Qinglongqiao Station to learn about the great achievements of the father of Chinese railways). In the afternoon, you can drive to the nearby Juyongguan Great Wall to compare and appreciate the steepness of the "Number One Great Wall in the World", completing a deep journey with the theme of the Great Wall.

Travel Guide: Transportation, Accommodation, and Seasons

Furong Ancient Town

How to reach: Seamless Connection Guide
The Badaling Great Wall is about 70 kilometers away from the center of Beijing, with various modes of transportation.
Public transportation (recommended for independent travelers):
High speed railway (fastest and most comfortable): Take the Beijing Zhangjiakou high-speed railway at Beijing North Station or Qinghe Station, and get off at "Badaling Great Wall Station". The journey takes about 20-30 minutes. After exiting the station, you need to walk or take a shuttle bus to the entrance of the cable car or the mountain climbing entrance.
Tourist shuttle bus: Take bus routes 877, 919, etc. at Deshengmen, and the journey takes about 1.5-2 hours (depending on road conditions). This is an economical traditional way.
Self driving: navigate to "Badaling Great Wall Parking Lot" and drive on the Beijing Tibet Expressway (G6) or Beijing Lijiang Expressway, taking about 1.5 hours. The parking lot is very tight and prone to congestion during holidays.
Travel agency one-day tour: Registering for a one-day tour product that includes transportation fees, tickets, and basic explanations is a hassle free and convenient choice for first-time travelers.

Best Travel Time
The scenery of Badaling is distinct throughout the four seasons, each with its own unique features. However, considering the climate and landscape, the best time to visit is in spring and autumn.
Spring and Autumn Golden Season (April May, September October): The climate is mild and pleasant, with the best scenery. In spring, mountain flowers adorn the landscape, and in autumn, the forest is dyed in layers, with high visibility, making it very suitable for photography and hiking.
Summer peak season (June August): lush vegetation and lush greenery. But the weather is hot and it's summer and student holidays, and the number of tourists has reached its peak, which may affect the experience. Be sure to pay attention to heatstroke prevention and avoid noon.
Winter off-season (November to March of the following year): Tourists are scarce, and you can quietly appreciate the vast nature of the Great Wall. The scenery after snow is particularly stunning. But due to the cold climate, some sections of the road may be closed due to ice and snow, so it is necessary to pay attention to warmth and safety.

 Accommodation Options
Surrounding Badaling Scenic Area (preferred for immersive experience):
Hotels/homestays at the foot of the Great Wall: Some hotels have windows that offer a view of the Great Wall, allowing guests to experience the peaceful atmosphere of the morning or night without tourists. This is suitable for photography enthusiasts and tourists who wish to have a deeper experience.
Yanqing urban area (a comfortable and convenient choice):
Yanqing city hotels: more choices, complete dining, shopping and other living facilities, with better cost-effectiveness than within the scenic area. Drive to the scenic area for about half an hour.
Beijing urban area (flexible economy option):
Various hotels in the urban area of Beijing: the widest range of choices, suitable for tourists who choose to visit the Great Wall as one of the stops on their multi day tour of Beijing. But sufficient round-trip transportation time needs to be reserved.

IntoTravelChina accommodation booking recommendations:
We suggest planning accommodation based on your itinerary priorities. If you come specifically for the Great Wall, especially if you want to capture the beautiful scenery in the morning and evening, we strongly recommend staying in the characteristic accommodation around the scenic area. If you are visiting Beijing for multiple days, it is more convenient to live along the subway in the city center. By booking with us, we can match you with the accommodation plan that best meets your needs, and package and arrange transportation connections. >>Click to contact IntoTravelChina travel consultant

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!

Our 2-day Zhangjiajie tour was beyond spectacular! As someone who’s visited Beijing and Shanghai for work, this trip revealed China’s wild, magical heart. Day 1 in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park felt like stepping onto Pandora—I’m a huge Avatar fan, and Yuanjiajie’s floating peaks left me breathless. The misty pillars and lush valleys like pure movie magic! Then came Fenghuang Ancient Town, we eat dinner beside the thundering waterfall. It seems Unreal! The night views of stilt houses glowing over the river were straight from a fairy tale. For fellow Avatar lovers and adventure seekers: Don’t miss this bucket-list experience! 10/10 would return.
