The origin of place names - the origin of "Shicuizhou"
The name "Shamian" comes from its most primitive geographical form. The people of Guangzhou call the small land in the Pearl River, which is formed by sediment, "sand" or "continent". This was originally a sandbar called "Shicuizhou", and during the Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasties, it had become a vital hub for domestic and international trade. In the Qing Dynasty, it was named "Shamian" because it was alluvial by the the Pearl River; In the ninth year of the Xianfeng reign (1859), a stone embankment was artificially built, forming the complete outline of the island today, hence it is also known as "Shamian Island".

The Path of Transformation - From Passive Port Opening to Active Protection
The modern history of Shamian Island is a microcosm of China's tortuous transition from seclusion to openness, and also a history of awakening from humiliating memories to cultural treasures.
-Geographical location and fortress protection (before 1859): Shamian Island was originally connected to the land and had fortress fortresses built on it, serving as a commercial and defensive hub.
-The Concession Era and the Rise of Architecture (1859-1941): After the Second Opium War, in 1859, the Qing government was forced to invest in the excavation of Shajiyong, making it an independent island. In 1861, Shamian became a part of the British and French Concession. Subsequently, more than ten countries established consulates here, and numerous foreign banks, foreign firms, and churches were built one after another, forming a clear and diverse European architectural complex, becoming the most "western-style" "international CBD" in Guangzhou.
-Return and Functional Changes (After 1946): After the victory of the Anti Japanese War, Shamian officially returned to the jurisdiction of Guangzhou City in 1946. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, some foreign affairs agencies were stationed here, but its profound historical and artistic value was gradually recognized. In 1959, Premier Zhou Enlai specifically instructed to protect the style of the sand faced buildings during his inspection.
-Wenbao Xinsheng and Tourist Landmark (1996 present): In 1996, the "Shamian Architectural Complex" was listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit; In 2022, Shamian Xidi Tourist Area was rated as a national 3A level tourist attraction. Nowadays, most of these former consulates, banks, and residences have been transformed into museums, cafes, and cultural and creative spaces. Their open-air museum value, known as the "Exhibition of World Architecture," has attracted countless people who pursue history and aesthetics.

Natural Creation - Oasis in the Heart of the Urban River
The "natural" environment of Shamian Island is the foundation of its suitability as a livable and tourist destination, complementing its rich history.
-Ecological Green Island with towering ancient trees: The island has excellent greenery, with 137 ancient and famous trees, especially the ancient camphor trees on Shamian North Street and Shamian Street, which are the most famous. They provide dense shade and are evergreen all year round, making it feel like walking in an urban forest. These ancient trees coexist with buildings, forming a unique and serene atmosphere in Shamian.
-The tranquil pattern surrounded by a river: The sand dunes are like a jade belt, separating the sand surface from the noisy urban area, creating an independent and peaceful "hidden in the city". Taking a walk along the edge of the stream, watching the banyan tree with drooping tendrils, it is quite charming.
-The vivid background of the the Pearl River picture scroll: the wide White Goose Pond in the south gives a wide view of the sand and a humid river wind. The flowing the Pearl River is the most vivid background of the static buildings on the sand surface, whether it is to watch the river boats in the daytime or watch the bright lights on the opposite bank at night.

Humanistic Craftsmanship - Epic Written in Stone
The soul of Shamian lies in its well preserved 169 European style buildings, each of which is a beautiful architectural work of art, collectively forming an "open-air museum".
-The former site of Guangdong Customs ("Big Bell Tower"): a landmark building at the southern end of Shamian. Built in 1916, in the European neoclassical style, it is supported by dozens of white columns and exudes a magnificent aura. The rooftop clock tower was once the time center of Shamian. It is now the Guangdong Customs Museum, with a collection of over 8000 items, providing in-depth insights into the development history of Chinese customs.
-The former site of the French Oriental Bank: a very beautiful century old French style mansion. The interior retains intact ancient floral tiles, wooden window frames, and red velvet curtains, which are magnificent and retro. Now the first floor has been converted into a caf é, where you can take a break and the mottled light and shadow instantly transport you through time.
-The Church of Our Lady of Lourdes: a small and beautiful Catholic church on the island, known for its stunning stained glass windows and peaceful interior space. The goose yellow exterior wall is particularly eye-catching under the shade of green trees, making it a popular background for photography.
-HSBC Former Site: A neoclassical style building built in 1887, with Ionic columns at the entrance and exquisite reliefs on the walls as its signature features. The details are breathtaking and are known as the "beauty ceiling".
-The former site of the Guangzhou branch of Taiwan Bank: a three story building built in 1907, with a facade made of gray granite. The seal engraving of "Taiwan Bank" on the lintel is still clear and recognizable, which is a special witness to modern history.

>Photography tips:
Classic panoramic camera position: On the opposite bank of Shajichong, capture the skyline of buildings on Shamian Island and their reflections in the water; By the the Pearl River, European architecture is the foreground, and the Pearl River and the city are the background.
Architectural details machine position:
1. In front of the former site of Guangdong Customs: Use wide-angle overhead photography to highlight the grandeur of its columns and the delicacy of its bell tower.
2. In front of each church: Take a symmetrical composition based on the courtyard and sculptures in front of the church.
3. Under the arcade of Shamian Street: Use the pillars to form a natural landscape frame and capture people strolling.
4. Afternoon Sunshine: Searching for the moment when sunlight shines through a century old tree and casts dappled light and shadow on the building facade.
Special reminder: Respect private areas and pay attention to relevant regulations when using drones.

Five Must Do Things to Unlock a Complete Journey to Shaman
1. Complete a journey to trace the "world architectural style"
-Goal: Take a map and try to identify different architectural styles: the rigor of neoclassicism (Guangdong Customs), the intricate decoration of Baroque, and the practicality and transparency of the arcade style. Search for exquisite reliefs, wrought iron balconies, and stained glass windows on buildings, and read stories on stones.
2. Enjoy European style afternoon tea in a century old western-style building
-Ultimate Experience: Choose a coffee shop that has been renovated like the former site of the French Oriental Bank, sit on the flower floor tiles, and taste a cup of coffee. Let taste and vision go through together, and feel the atmosphere of merchants gathered in the old concessions, as if you can hear the sound of boat flute on the the Pearl River in the distance.
3. Visit a professional museum and feel the pulse of history
-Deep Culture: Enter the Guangdong Customs Museum and systematically understand the modern customs history of Guangzhou as a millennium old commercial port and the changes of the Maritime Silk Road through more than 8000 collections and special exhibitions, making the historical connotations behind the architectural appearance concrete and profound.
4. Collect a slice of time from dawn to lanterns
-Key: The beauty of sand noodles changes over time. In the morning, enjoy the peaceful streets and clear bird songs alone; In the afternoon, watching the light and shadow play under the shade of trees; From dusk to night, when the lights are on, the buildings are outlined by warm light, and the the Pearl River night scene is romantic, which is the prime time to shoot large films and feel the atmosphere.
5. Take a healing walk along Shajiyong and the Pearl River
-Relax your mind and body: Don't just wander around the core area. Strolling along Shajiyong, where green trees provide shade, it is particularly peaceful. Then go to the the Pearl River riverside benches in the south and sit down to watch the ships coming and going, so that the river wind can disperse the city's bustle. This is a gift of peace from Shamian to tourists.

Shopping on Nanjing Road in Shanghai was just amazing! It's truly the "First Commercial Street of China", where tradition and modernity blend perfectly. You can find awesome souvenirs and experience the trendy vibes in cool stores. The neon lights at night are just spectacular, shining bright like Times Square in New York. The food here is incredible too. I had a feast for my taste buds. Shanghai, I'll definitely be back!
